Beat is a black table light featuring a slender articulated arm that can be adjusted to direct the light beam. Made from hand spun brass sculpted by artisan craftsmen in Northern India, the creation of this Beat light is part of an ancient process that takes four days to complete. This modern desk light has a matte black finish which contrasts against its warm, golden beaten interior that is re-purposed to refract and reflect a soft and warm luminosity.

Concept
Perpetuating the skills of artisan craftsmen in Northern India, Beat’s origin is a re-purposed water vessel; hand-raised, welded, beaten and skimmed into functional silhouettes for the refraction of golden light.
In 2004 Tom was involved in an initiative in Jaipur to create alternative possibilities for the rapidly vanishing craftsmen and their skills. The Beat light was instigated during a NGO development project undertaken by the British Council and Tom Dixon in 2002, in an effort to maintain and develop the skills of street metalworkers of Rajasthan. The underlying proportions and techniques of traditional brass work used to create water vessels and cooking pots were used to create new objects of sculptural simplicity with a rethought functionality.
The creation of the beat light is part of an ancient process that takes four days to complete.

For Shoreditch House located at the top of an old biscuit factory, Design Research Studio evolved the successful Soho House brand to suit the Shoreditch audience whilst maintaining the historic qualities of the Biscuit Building. Our vision was to create a design that preserved the rawness of the building intrinsic to maintaining a sense of place. Since its inception in 2002, Design Research Studio has been involved in global commissions in the UK, Continental Europe, The Middle East and Asia. Recent projects include the newly opened Paramount Club in the top three floors of Centrepoint, an iconic London landmark and Shoreditch House, the latest addition to Nick Jones’ series of clubs. Other iconic spaces include a temporary installation for Sony Playstation, the London Design Embassy in the London ICA, Habitat Regent’s Street, which won at the Conde Nast Traveller innovation and Design Awards: Best Retail Design in April 2007, Tokyo Hipsters Club and Oliver Peyton’s restaurant ‘Inn at the Park.’
