MOKUME by THE FINEST proves how much liveliness can be found in tone-on-tone colouration when it’s uniquely curated in the light. Because light is not simply light. It is the most essential cornerstone of design. Here we see curvaceous, lively forms taking shape in the luxurious and shimmering silk. Contrastingly, there is the dulled matt shimmer of the New Zealand wool which, when combined with the silk, further elucidates each shape. The result is a natural grain of sorts, reminiscent of the rings a tree picks up as it ages and the drawing of Damascene steel produced over hundreds of years.
“I’ve drawn on my experience training as a goldsmith in this piece too. In Japanese, ‘mokume’ means ‘the grain of wood’. It’s also a common word for blacksmiths to use. Different materials are welded together, masterfully forged and rolled to produce such a wonderfully flowing grain effect that so reminds me of wood. Translating this into a completely different textile material was particularly appealing to me, and THE FINEST gave me the opportunity to do so with the very highest quality product. Handmade in Nepal from the very best materials, 155,000 individual knots per metre squared are tied together to achieve this amazing look.”
