Concept
Contemporary design, in the pop graphic style, for the new line from TOM DIXON for the CEMENTILES collection. Available in two sizes- 20x20 cm square, or 20x23 cm hexagonal – each tile is entirely hand-made. These decorative items are an artistic re-interpretation of some architectural icons in Britain’s capital.
“London- our home city- provides all the inspiration we need for this new collection of surfaces; the building blocks and the textures of this thousand-year-old city are imprinted in this designer’s mind. Bricks of red clay, cracked pavements and pebble dash walls, the signatures of a crumbling capital in constant re-invention are reworked in a graphic, pop art style to suit the simplicity demanded by the century-old tile manufacturing process.”

Design Research Studio is an interior design practice specializing in high concept interiors, large scale installations and architectural design. Based in London and under the creative direction of internationally renowned designer Tom Dixon, our team realise a full and developed narrative to each project; whether in retail, hospitality or corporate interiors. Working directly with manufacturers and with access to a global supplier network, design Research Studio are able to employ raw industrial processes and forms giving distinctive character to a space combined with true custom made design. Working with our in house product development team, Design Research Studio has detailed knowledge of production methods, lead times, materials and finishes as well as having the capacity to create large quantities of custom items. By interpreting a project in its purist form and the meaning of the building within its environment, our team is well known for connecting the design to the building or interior to the local area, its community and target audience. For Shoreditch House located at the top of an old biscuit factory, Design Research Studio evolved the successful Soho House brand to suit the Shoreditch audience whilst maintaining the historic qualities of the Biscuit Building. Our vision was to create a design that preserved the rawness of the building intrinsic to maintaining a sense of place. Since its inception in 2002, Design Research Studio has been involved in global commissions in the UK, Continental Europe, The Middle East and Asia. Recent projects include the newly opened Paramount Club in the top three floors of Centrepoint, an iconic London landmark and Shoreditch House, the latest addition to Nick Jones’ series of clubs. Other iconic spaces include a temporary installation for Sony Playstation, the London Design Embassy in the London ICA, Habitat Regent’s Street, which won at the Conde Nast Traveller innovation and Design Awards: Best Retail Design in April 2007, Tokyo Hipsters Club and Oliver Peyton’s restaurant ‘Inn at the Park.’
