About this product

Architonic ID: 1152207

Year of Launch: 1955

Arne Jacobsen designed the Munkegård fixture for Munkegårdsskolen in Søborg, Denmark in 1955. This was the first recessed fixture which illuminated the ceiling, thereby evening out light contrasts. The fixture had a discreet presence in the room, in line with Arne Jacobsen´s architectural approach.

CONCEPT: The fixture looks like a disc hovering just below the ceiling – an impression primarily created by the illuminated opening and the suspended placement of the fixture below the mounting surface. The 2-layer glass/acrylic shade ensures uniform, gently diffuse lighting. This fixture gives the room the illusion of extra height.

FINISH: High lustre chrome plated or satin chrome plated. Matt-white acrylic/toughened clear glass.

MATERIAL: Shade: 2-layer: matt-white acrylic and toughened glass. Edge ring: High lustre chrome plated or satin chrome plated, brass.

Concept

In 1955, Arne Jacobsen designed the first recessed fixture to illuminate the ceiling and in that way even out light contrasts. He created it for a school, called Munkegårdsskolen, in Søborg just outside Copenhagen, hence the fixture’s name. The Munkegaard is suspended right below the ceiling where it seems to hover in the air when switched on. The shade is made of two layers of glass and acrylic that provide a particularly even and soft light and which makes the ceiling appear higher too. The Munkegaard is distinctly characterised by Arne Jacobsen, with its discrete, elegant and timeless appearance that complements all architectural settings, also today.
