Born in Brussels, Sylvain Willenz studied design in the U.K. and U.S. before returning home to open his design office in 2004. Since then, he’s enjoyed a steady stream of praise and awards in Europe and beyond. In 2009, he was named Belgian designer of the year by the Biennale Interieur. “Our interest lies in developing powerful products with timeless and mass appeal,” Willenz says. ”Function and aesthetic are given particular attention through subtle yet distinctive decisions.” His Outline Table (2016) is a perfect example of this approach. He chose steel with an oval cross section for the frame, which seems to transform from thick to thin as a viewer’s vantage point changes, lending a pleasing and surprising dynamic appearance. With an elegantly sized marble top added to its “outline” structure, this table imparts an impression of graceful utility and timelessness – Willenz’s function and aesthetic in perfect harmony.
