The Davos of Design

Love it or hate it, you can't ignore it. If it's April, it's Milan and the Salone del Mobile. Indisputably the world's biggest and most-attended design fair – and that's before you've factored in the various design districts and events of the Fuorisalone.

Impossible to cover in its entirety, groaning infrastructurally under the weight of the hundreds of thousands of international visitors who pour into the city, it offers business and creative reward to A&D professionals who are prepared to keep two different, and on the fact of it contradictory, strategies in place.

Number one: Plan. And then plan some more. Get yourself a copy of our indispensable Architonic Guide Salone del Mobile Milano 2016 (download it below!), and work out in advance of your trip how to navigate your way through Milan Design Week, efficiently and effectively. Don't forget to stop off at the Brera Design District, the SuperDesign Show and Ventura Lambrate. Architects in particular will want to make for the inaugural space&interiors exhibition from MADEexpo, which will showcase the best in architectural materials. And for pure inspiration, catch Sou Fujimoto's light-as-architecture installation for COS, 'Only Light'.

Number two: Go with the flow. Embrace the chance encounter and the spontaneous invitation. Go off-piste and you might just meet someone who shifts your creative paradigm or changes your business thinking.

And here's some breaking news: as part of our Architonic Trend Analysis series, we've just published our Top 200 Designers list, an unmissable ranking of the great and the good, based exclusively on our insider information – the results generated by our users' active text searches on architonic.com.

Va bene?

Trend Analysis: Top 200 Designers on Architonic

Ranging from living legends to young talents who are already having an impact on the market: Architonic’s new Top 200 Designers ranking foregrounds the most the popular designers and architects that users of architonic.com have actively searched for over the course of 2015.

The ranking results are not influenced by the number of product views on Architonic. The presentation is based solely on the number of relevant search queries entered into architonic.com's text-search field. Some designers' names are also perceived as brand names, such is the level of their recognition.

(The ranking was published on the day the renowned architect Zaha Hadid died unexpectedly. We have decided to keep her in this Top 200 listing.)

N°16: MICHELE DE LUCCHI

The work of Italian architect and designer Michele de Lucchi reflects his enquiring mind and breadth of interest. His portfolio includes a number of private and public projects in the fields of architecture, technology, design and crafts.

Architonic spoke with Michele de Lucchi at the recent Light + Building fair in Frankfurt to gain an insight into his architectural thinking and artistic sensibility for materials.

Michele de Lucchi: The material that I would choose to work with for the next three years would be wood. Wood is long-lasting and it is a material that is available to us without destroying nature – as long as we don’t consume and produce too much.

Brera Design District will celebrate its 7th edition in Milan from 12 to 17 April. The theme this year is “Designing is Listening; the work of Chiara Luzzana and Paolo Ferrarini will allow the identification of the act of listening as a metaphor, the founding principle of a design and creative project. Several international brands have chosen the Brera Design District as a stage for their events as well as some of the best-known international and Italian design signatures: Aldo Cibic for Slow Wood, CtrlZak for JCP, Daniel Libeskind for Loloey, Elena Salmistraro for Karpeta, Giulio Iacchetti with Internoitaliano, Hagit Pincovici for Clan, Jader Almeida for Sollos, Matteo Thun and Antonio Rodriguez for Fantini, Max Lamb and Philippe Maulin at Hem, Migliore+Servetto Architects for space&interiors, Nendo, Jasper Morrison, Fabio Novembre and Mac Stopa for Cappellini, Patricia Urquiola and Federico Pepe, Philippe Nigro for Novamobili.

There will be also special projects and the celebration of design will be on Friday 18 April during the Brera Design Night. The cultural initiatives will be supported by the district according to the aim of the Brera Design District mission. The district welcomes the Brera Design Apartment: the new way of conceiving a showroom, an exclusive place that shows a different way of presenting and communicating design. It's a private space in one of the most characteristics courtyards of the district, between via Palermo 1 and via Solferino, with historical furnishings, a typical Milanese interior, able to house events, meetings and expositions selected or produced by the Brera Design District.

ARCHITECTURE CONNECTS WITH THE SALONE DEL MOBILE.MILANO
Text: MADEexpo

Interest is high in space&interiors, the event connected with the Salone del Mobile.Milano which, during Design Week, puts leading-edge materials and ideas in the architectural spotlight

This major event focuses the attention of architects, designers and Italian/international buyers on the latest trends in finishings for architecture, along with an exhibition – the New Components Code – that brings together a select group of the most significant products from each company. In a nutshell, space&interiors is a brand-new event conceived by MADE expo to run during Design Week in Milan, showcasing the finest architectural finishes as part of a concept designed to offer visitors a unique, multisensory and immersive experience.
Curated by Migliore+Servetto Architects, the design of space&interiors leverages a New Map of Living, a “manifesto of architecture” within which materials and ideas combine to offer an opportunity to read and interpret the latest trends in interior design. Ico Migliore explains: “The system of relationships between components within the architectural space not only determines the overall quality of a design, it helps create an ideal abacus of contemporary construction that visitors to space&interiors get to discover in advance.”

space&interiors explores the narrative interface between a variety of materials offered by a selection of companies specialised in the manufacture of groundbreaking, leading-edge components: surfaces, floors, cladding, paint and decoration, doors, handles, finishes, wall fittings, stairs, architectural glass, cladding for facades, windows and facades, arbours, gazebos, curtains, architectural lighting, home automation and home entertainment, in a completely unique event under the auspices of the wide-ranging programme of the Milan Design Week.
