This particularity constitutes a tool of independence in design and research. Since 2003, smarin has been exploring the notion of comfort and developing unconventional expressions centred on the thriving of the living. Smarin questions our automatisms and proposes to invent new routines. The smarin design studio creates projects for furniture, scenography and layout for both public and private spaces. Using tool-objects and furniture-systems, smarin creates situations of interaction and spaces for collective invention. Since 2003, the smarin studio has been deeply exploring habits in our relationships to exchange and to objects. We are interested in the object as a process. The object choreographs flows, labor, behaviors, and exchanges. Developing an object helps give form to the world. The choice of materials defines a landscape of extraction and transportation. The scale of production conditions the form of labor, and thus the living conditions of the workers involved. Through the use of an object, a behavior is imposed: its durability, practicality, playability, its power of distinction or exclusion. Thus, a way of entering into relationships develops endlessly, of producing exchanges, a network of consumption, a market. The object generates the world of our waste, which must be transformed again in order to maintain a balance. smarin maintains exchanges with other disciplines—arts, sciences, sociology, politics—in order to address projects in a comprehensive way.
