MORE ABOUT GäRSNäS

Curious and sustainable.
Gärsnäs is both the future and the past. Our family-owned factory in Österlen, Sweden, has been making furniture since 1893. Now we produce furniture for people today and tomorrow and for a long time to come. We are curious about the future we are making. We like to discover and investigate, interpret the spirit of the age, its needs, its sense of beauty…
Curiosity is in our DNA. So is sustainability. Since the beginning, Gärsnäs has used its resources cleverly and efficiently. Today it is a prerequisite for us to make meaningful furniture in an already crowded market in a world facing environmental crisis. How can Gärsnäs make a difference?
We need to be wise and sensible. Our furniture must maintain many different kinds of qualities and be part of an ecological cycle. Our furniture is created by outstanding designers who work together with Gärsnäs. Raw materials are sourced nearby in southern Sweden and Denmark. Genuine human craftsmanship has always been a vital part of Gärsnäs. Today these skills and experienced hands meet the latest opportunities provided by computer technology.
Quality is a question of time. We do not forget our furniture once it is finished and sold. We rather think of them as our children. When they leave home, we stay in touch. We accept our responsibility. Once age, wear and trends have taken a toll on our furniture, we welcome them home again. We take care of them. We already have a system of renovation and renewal for our furniture that has provided long and faithful service. Now we are improving this system even further with circular, long-term concepts that make reuse an obvious and desirable choice. Renovated, reupholstered, repainted furniture get a new lease of life and stay vibrant over a long time. Thus we also have long and good relationships with our customers. This is our pride, alongside our new furniture, all with that “Gärsnäs feeling”: lightness, innovation, quality, comfort and high-class craftsmanship. A special attraction. This is Gärsnäs.
About Gärsnäs
Gärsnäs AB is a family-owned company with its own furniture factory and headquarters in the village of Gärsnäs in Österlen, Skåne. Since 2003, the company is owned and managed by Anna and Dag Klockby, as well as Åke Axelsson, Anna’s father, interior architect and furniture maker, known for his numerous interiors and chair designs over a career spanning 60 years. Åke’s first chair for Gärsnäs, S-217, was designed back in 1963. Some 57 years later, it remains in production; a record in sustainability that will be hard to beat. He has also designed many of our bestsellers: Light & Easy, Akustik, Gästis, etc.
Gärsnäs was founded in 1893 and initially made period furniture for homes in Skåne. The timber came from nearby forests. After the second world war, the company adopted the modern Scandinavian style. From the mid-60s, production was increasingly geared towards furniture for public spaces, which became a Gärsnäs speciality being furniture for the public space.
In 2003, the factory was acquired by Åke Axelsson and Anna and Dag Klockby, and the brand has since grown and won great acclaim in Sweden and internationally.
Designers including Åke Axelsson, David Ericsson, Färg & Blanche, Nina Jobs, Pierre Sindre, TAF Arkitekter, Matti Klenell, David Regestam and many others provide Gärsnäs with exciting impetus.
In spring 2019, a new, dedicated showroom was inaugurated, designed by Dive Architects. Generous spaces and large windows open on to the fields outside. The older office building was given a new facade. Now it is easy to take time and experience Gärsnäs furniture where it is actually made. The aim is to develop a design-cultural meeting place in Österlen.
There is also an office and showroom in Stockholm, at Skeppsbron 30 in Gamla Stan, situated in the 17th-century Brandenburgska Huset. The classical apartment’s homely feel interacts with our modern collections of furniture. You are very welcome to visit us on the third floor.
Gärsnäs furniture is environmentally declared and approved by Möbelfakta’s criteria. We are also certified in accordance with ISO 14001.
