The backyard swimming pool: an abiding fascination of skateboarders and artists such as David Hockney—and the inspiration behind Aesop Century City.

Aesop Century City is situated within a lively retail hub. Created by our in-house Design Department, the space pays homage to the azure depths of the backyard swimming pool—one of Los Angeles’s iconic cultural symbols and an abiding fascination for artists and skateboarders alike.

Capturing the aesthetics of leisure and outdoor living, resident artists such as David Hockney and Edward Ruscha helped to cement the identity of the city through graphic depictions of the pool. Similarly inspired, our Century City signature store offers a fresh interpretation of this suburban fixture.

3942 curved ceramic tiles in a custom swimming-pool blue wrap the store’s floor, walls, counters and shelving bays, creating a single homogenous surface which appears to float in space. This outer shell is redolent of the texture of the city’s empty pools, which evoke both decline in the suburban landscape, and, in the case of skateboarders, opportunity.

A dynamic façade of operable glass panels creates an appealing tension between the corner tenancy and its environment, allowing for flexible arrangement depending on the flows of the retail center.
