SOUL (SOUVENIR OF UNITED LEBANON)
Design fairs are usually conversation starters. It was in London a few years ago... Frédéric Winkler from DCWéditions met French-Lebanese designer Charles Kalpakian. Their respective booths stood face-to-face. But this wasn't a standoff. On the contrary, they were both engaged by camaraderie and elective affinities, including a desire to work together, and above all, to get to know each other. Childhood, education, games and dreams... For Charles Kalpakian, it was Lebanon and that paradoxical freedom, right out of school, to run and play in a city that was in pieces. It is these memories that he has metabolized into the SOUL collection.

Charles Kalpakian was born in Beirut in 1982. After collaborating with prestigious agencies including the Ora Ito and Christophe Pillet in 2011, he launched his design studio and has since then been developing his own projects. He draws his inspiration from his roots in France and Lebanon, as well as street-art culture. These influences take shape through the reinterpretation of motifs derived from the decorative arts that were in turn inherited from the history and geography of Lebanon. Charles’ line of work is always sharp yet flexible almost like the strokes created by a calligraphy brush. Ranging from product to interior design, his ventures always highlight the richness of his origins combined with the elements of Western modernity. Charles collectible designs « Cinétisme » , « Moon » and « Clé de Sol » are shown exclusively by Galerie BSL in Paris. He also created the Rocky credenza for the brand LaChance. Since then, he has also been working with many international companies and brands such as DCW, Habitat, Haymann Edition, Nemo lighting, Dupont Corian, Lelievre, PUIG, Fondation Luciano Benetton. In 2017, he is represented by Joy Mardini design gallery in Beirut and it develops and design private commissions furniture across the world.
