Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby founded their eponymous studio in 1996 after graduating with Master’s degrees in Architecture from The Royal College of Art in London. From their first studio in Trellick Tower in London, they designed their first piece, the Loop Table, produced by Isokon in 1997. Much of Barber and Osgerby’s early work involved the folding and shaping of sheet material, influenced by the white card that they had used frequently in architectural model making. Plywood and perspex were used in the development of the Pilot Table, 1999, and Stencil Screen, 2000.
Über Fredericia Furniture
Since our establishment in 1911, Fredericia has cultivated a proud tradition of exquisite craftsmanship and innovative design. This tradition, spearheaded by the Graversen family, has thrived through close collaboration with a circle of interna-tionally recognised designers, each contributing significantly to shaping Fredericia into the esteemed institution it is today.
Emerging from the origins of Danish furniture design, Fredericia’s rich heritage embodies an exceptional design archive showcasing undeniable classics, a profound understanding of furniture design, and a commitment to craftsmanship passed down through generations. Our proud spirit harkens back to the founding workshop, established on the principles of tradi-
tional craftsmanship and modern industrial production. Initially named Fredericia Stolefabrik (Fredericia Chair Factory) in the city of its namesake, it swiftly gained renown for crafting furniture of exceptionally high quality.
In 1955, visionary entrepreneur Andreas Graversen blended the legacy of exquisite furniture with modernist ideals through close collaboration with Børge Mogensen, Fredericia’s inaugural house designer. Mogensen’s intuitive understanding of materials and acute sense of proportions resulted in a collection of iconic pieces still revered today by collectors, museums, architects, and designers worldwide.
Since Mogensen’s era, Fredericia has continually evolved, remaining attuned to the contemporary zeitgeist. Over time, the Graversen family has expanded Fredericia’s roster of designers, from Ditzel, Klint, and Wegner to contemporaries such as Barber Osgerby, Jasper Morrison, Cecilie Manz, Maria Bruun, Hugo Passos, and Keiji Takeuchi. Together, they cultivate a creative culture marked by design integrity, artistic expression, material expertise, and industry acumen, fostering the rejuvenation and reinterpretation of Fredericia’s design ethos. This ethos embraces the virtues of patience and the relentless pursuit of excellence.
A proud B Corp
Fredericia’s dedication to sustainability runs through every facet of our operations. As a family-owned and independent company, our decisions are driven by the core values deeply embedded in Fredericia’s sense of responsibility.
Since 1911, Fredericia’s company ethics have revolved around promoting mindful consumption. Our furniture production remains local, situated within Europe and at our workshop in Denmark, where skilled upholsterers meticulously craft design icons daily. Meeting the rigorous standards set by B Lab, Fredericia is a proud participant in a global movement of busi-nesses leveraging their influence for good—a comprehensive certification encompassing social and environmental impact, transparency, and accountability. We translate our values into action by endeavouring to construct a more inclusive and sustainable economy, thereby fostering positive effects on workers, communities, customers, and the planet.
“My grandfather built Fredericia on clarity, good materials, and humanity as design concepts. Today, we also perceive clarity as transparency in the value chain, good materials as sustainable, traceable utilisation of nature’s resources, and humanity as social responsibility within both the production chain and the local community.”
- Rasmus Graversen, CEO and third generation of the Graversen family
