What makes the Sticks series of coat stands so unique is the combination of plastic and wood. According to designers Mia Gammelgaard and Ehlén Johansson, however, the idea behind this new family of products is based above all on the plastic hooks. “How can the same hooks be used in different ways? That is the question we put to ourselves,” explained Gammelgaard. Sticks is a new addition to the collection at van Esch, the Goirle-based family business established in 1972, and specialised in the production of cloakroom systems and entrance accessories.
According to the Swedish-born Gammelgaard, the greatest challenge for any designer is not actually designing a product, but coming up with a good idea. By using the plastic hooks in a number of different ways, the designs in this series are suitable for use in a range of situations. The coat racks can for example be attached to the wall, or be used as a free-standing element.
The user can also base his choice on the number of hooks required. Thanks to the uniform use of material, the different models can even be combined. Sticks HJH30 and HJH60, suitable for wall-mounting, come with two and five hooks, respectively. Sticks G+ and Sticks Round, the free-standing models, have five or twelve hooks. The aluminium ring, integrated in both models, offers storage space for umbrellas.
The introduction of Sticks represents a continuation of the collaboration between van Esch and designers Ehlén Johansson and Mia Gammelgaard. The same two designers were also responsible for Spring, the complete but above all flexible cloakroom system from the Van Esch collection. “However, because we have used entirely different materials for Sticks, there is practically no comparison between the systems.”

Born in Stockholm in 1964, but currently living in Copenhagen from where she has run her own design studio for many years. Studied at the University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm and at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts’ School of Architecture in Copenhagen. Mia first arrived as a newly qualified architect to spend a year with us at Blå Station in Åhus, Sweden, as an assistant draughtsman to Börge Lindau. It was Mia’s first experience of the design world, and she was eager to learn and to take everything in. Since then, Mia has pursued her own career and won several international awards and prizes for her product designs. Mia’s strength lies in always keeping her eyes and ears open, cultivating a constantly inquisitive ap- proach that means always asking questions – and giving answers. Nothing is too small or unimportant. Nothing is left to chance. If you don’t ask, you don’t get any answers... Professionally and personally, Mia is a mixture of a perfectionist and functionalist, yet she always manages to maintain a humble attitude to problem-solving, reassured by her faith in the belief that everything will work out in the end. But one thing Mia doesn’t like is losing. She’s a warm person with an open heart, as easy to read as a book even though there is still a lot that’s hidden there between the lines. Mia is close to wonderment, close to scepticism, close to laughter. Close to her feelings. To Mia, design is a game. A game that is built around shapes, a respect for production and close cooperation between people. Works is almost always a team effort among large or small groups of people with their own different skills. Creating a dialogue is important. It means that Mia can take control of a project with a sure hand and see it through from the very first sketch all the way to the finished product. Her interest in industrial produc- tion, new materials and new production techniques, combined with her sense of creativity results in beautiful, functional products where the needs of the user are always the prime consideration. 2005- Mia Gammelgaard Design 1996-2006 Partner i Pelikan Copenhagen 1996- Freelance designer, IKEA of Sweden 1993-1996 “Studio Copenhagen” Design of?ce for IKEA 1991-1992 Trainee position at “Blå Station”, Åhus 1988-1989 The Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Copenhagen 1986-1991 Konstfackskolan, University College of Arts Crafts and Design,Department of Interior and Furniture Design, Stockholm 1964 Born in Stockholm, Sweden
