Brooklyn is only a short distance from Manhattan yet it has its own, highly distinctive identity. Talk to Brooklyn’s tight-knit but burgeoning community of designer-makers and you get the impression that this New York borough is widely seen as more romantic, bohemian, less overtly worldly than the more commerce-focused Manhattan. Yet it’s also easy to exaggerate the differences between these two creative hubs. After all, Brooklyn’s new generation of designers are, in their own way, highly ambitious and entrepreneurial. Even so, the ethos of their businesses is more leftfield, possibly more laid-back than those of Manhattan.

What we think

Workstead is a design studio, founded in 2009 by Stefanie Brechbuehler and Robert Highsmith. Their studios are located in Brooklyn and the Hudson Valley, where they focus on architectural and interior design, lightning, furniture and exhibitions.

Workstead's aim is to design responsible works that create a sense of place for both the objects they contain and the people that experience them. Their palette is strong and rich, yet simple and different

In 2012, Workstead designed the public spaces for the highly acclaimed Wythe Hotel in Brooklyn. Workstead currently has projects in New York, Conneticut, Oklahoma, and California. The studio's lightning is sold through their online store and through shops in New York City and Los Angeles. Their installations can be found in the collections of Barneys, Facebook, Levi's, Google, Yelp, the Harpoon Brewery, and in private residences all over the world.
