Exactly thirty years ago, the Dutch furniture label Pastoe introduced the ‘A’dammer’, an eye-catching freestanding storage cabinet by designer Aldo van den Nieuwelaar (1944). Since then, the A’dammer has been one of the best-selling Dutch furniture items ever. To celebrate this happy occasion, Pastoe has issued a limited edition of this Dutch design icon.
A DUTCH DESIGN ICON
The A’dammer was the first storage unit with a one-piece roll-down shutter. The door literally disappeared once the cabinet was opened. The ridged sides of the roll-down shutter provided a grip at any height. This revolutionary design was justly rewarded with numerous prizes, including the ASID award (1980) and the prestigious Kho Liang-Ie prize (1986). The cabinet was also purchased by prominent museums such as the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Kunstgewerbe Museum in Berlin. Today, the A’dammer has the status of a modern icon for both national and international design.
A “REAL” PASTOE
The A’dammer is also a striking example of Pastoe’s assured design vision. Pastoe has produced furniture in its Utrecht factory since 1913. By consciously choosing a clear-cut design language, the Pastoe collection ensures aesthetic endurance. These are timeless furniture pieces which can be varied in endless combinations in the most diverse interior environments. Only simplicity and pure design allows the flexibility to adapt the furniture to suit any decorating style.
The A’dammer also speaks to the new generation. Numerous families placed the cabinet in the living room, shifting it later to the study or the garage. Then it went along to university when the kids left home. They in turn rediscovered the A’dammer as a design classic and put it back on display in the living room. Demand for the A’dammer on design websites such as Funda is exceptionally high.
LIMITED EDITION
Since it has been exactly thirty years since the A’dammer was introduced, Pastoe is issuing a special edition under the name Penguin, the variation with a bulging midsection. In upbeat colours – pink and turquoise – and a limited edition of 250. Bernasco says, “Upbeat colours for a happy occasion. We’re pulling out all the stops and getting our party hats on!”
