Wogg 1 – 1984 furniture with an entirely modern twist
It was hailed furniture of the year in 1984. Thirty years later, our legendary shelving system Wogg 1 is once again at the cutting edge. To achieve this, the furniture has undergone stylistic fine tuning, with bookends adding new splashes of colour and a refined wood look giving new standards to the material. This represents aesthetic quality that is one step ahead. The Wogg 1 shelving system by designer Gerd Lange was the hit of the season in 1984. The home design magazine "Schöner Wohnen" named it furniture of the year and you needn’t look far to see why. The shelving system was very well thought out and based on an innovative connection design. This meant that all abutting surfaces could be horizontally and vertically interconnected, adding stability to the structure and allowing a number of new functions. The new furniture also used the new postforming technique that meant very thin shelves could be used without jeopardising their load capacity, creating an entirely new and very elegant look.
Successful development after 30 years
Exactly 30 years after Wogg 1 was first unveiled, the legendary furniture has now made a comeback. The Swiss design duo Loris&Livia from London has developed and redesigned the system in a contemporary setting. To do this, the two designers studied the old shelving system in detail, retained its basic structure, while at the same giving the furniture a suitable modern twist. The manufacturer Wogg made this possible by developing the postforming technique using a wooden veneer, giving the shelving a warmer and more structured look. The typical elegant and lightweight design of the panel elements of the original Wogg 1 remain untouched.
But Loris&Livia’s improvements did not stop there. Under the name Wogg 57, they therefore created a refined bookend for the shelving system that not only incorporates the geometrical shape of Wogg 1 but also exudes its own identity. Wogg 57 is a colourful and functional element that can be positioned anywhere on the shelf and can be moved freely between the lines to add a splash of colour where you want it. This circular, sculptural accessory made of metal can now also be used as bookends, mirrors or small cabinets of curiosities − whatever takes your fancy. Wogg 1 successfully catapulted all of this to the very forefront of contemporary design. As an exclusive anniversary offer, Wogg 1 is available in 2014 at its original 1984 price, in black or white.
