In the TV chair, one notes the influence of Charles Eames, particularly when one considers the chair presented by the latter at the MOMA in New York in 19540, at the exhibition, ‘Organic Design in Home Furnishings’.
But above all, one finds in the TV chair the seeds of all of Paulin’s subsequent works in terms of the construction of his pieces. In effect, the metal base is much more than just a base: it constitutes the true framework of the chair, from which springs all the support offered to the body. With the use of moulded foam and the fabric covering which dresses the seat and back like an item of clothing, prefiguring the approach which paved the way for the subsequent freedom of development in terms of form which abounded in the world of seating – such as the iconic Mushroom, Tulip, The Tongue or Ribbon Chair.
The use of foam and textiles made possible visual fluidity, a sculptural freedom of line – the seat/back profile of the TV chair describes with finesse the contours of a boomerang with almost perfect symmetry – and also remarkable comfort, reinforced by the steel-sprung suspension. The rigour of the metal structure, visible in the single chair base, disappears totally on the seat and back, where the soft, sensual, organic, welcoming and ultra-comfortable padding anticipates a world which desires to turn its back on the privations of the post-war period and, several years later, was to declare its desire for ‘free love’.
To take account of the increase in average size of the population since 1953, the 2009 re-edited version of this chair scrupulously respects the design of the original whilst gaining several centimetres in terms of width x depth x height. The base is offered in the original satin-finish black lacquer, but also in brilliant chrome.
