pp225 | Flag Halyard Chair

Armchairs from PP Møbler, Designed by Hans J. Wegner

Product description

In 2002, PP Møbler received "Bo Bedre's" Classics Award for resuming production of this lounge chair.

With The Flag Halyard Chair, Wegner acknowledges the early modernists such as Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe, and Marcel Breuer, and proves that he too masters designs in chromium- plated steel pipes. Despite this gesture, the chair is still decidedly Wegner. The chair's surfaces are made of plaited flag halyard with the longhaired sheepskin softening the industrial sharpness of the steel, adding comfort.

However, the story behind the design is more than just a dialogue of art history. The shape of the chair's seat was conceived during a family holiday in Århus, Denmark. The family spent many days on the beach, and using sand Wegner spent a lot of time there experimenting with the shape of the seat. The anecdote shows us that Wegner was always working - but it also shows us that playing was crucial in his work process.
