Pirkka Stool

Stools from Artek, Designed by Ilmari Tapiovaara

Product description

The Pirkka Stool was originally conceived as a seat to cool off on after the sauna. Its design draws on traditional Finnish furniture while being perfectly suited to clean modern interiors. Its legs are made of solid birch, its seat composed of two pieces of curved pinewood. The opening in the middle of the seat serves as a handle to easily move the stool. Pirkka Stool comes in two heights and is part of the collection of stools, chairs, and tables that marks the culmination of Ilmari Tapiovaara’s interest in synthesising tradition with modernity.

Seat stained brown, frame stained black -
available in 35cm and 44cm heights

Concept

Pirkka marks a temporary return to solid wood for Ilmari Tapiovaara, following his innovative work with tubular steel. The first in the series was the stool, intended by Tapiovaara as the ideal place to sit and cool down after a sauna. The Bar Stool, Bench, and Chair bear the same remarkable aesthetic. Frames are composed of solid birch, while seats and backrests are made from pinewood. The tapering frame and braces provide a charismatic contrast to the solidity and smooth curves of the pine elements.

Created in the 1950s, the Pirkka series is inspired by traditional vernacular Finnish furniture, but in a modern interpretation – flexible, informal, and effortlessly suited to contemporary living.
