A collection dedicated to those who believe that elegance does not require ostentation.
A unique, original collection designed for Golran by Florentine artist and designer Isabella Sodi, who instils her valuable aesthetic and cultural know-how of interior design and haute couture into her own personal interpretation of the carpet. The collection is made up of a few pieces with a strong emotional impact suspended between past and future.
They are strongly rooted in tradition, commencing with their place of production – Nepal – where the most advanced tool is experience, where hands with age-old skill masterfully move over the old looms, where the most noble yarns are hand-dyed to give unique effects, inspired by the most classic designs that have added charm and luxury to the most beautiful homes of both East and West.
The resulting collection, with remarkable sensitivity, offers an insight into the precious art of carpet weaving, focusing in particular on ancient Nepali techniques.
Visiting Nepal reveals that technology is not an added value; instead it is the rituals and age-old gestures, infinitely repeated, that give strength and spirit to our pieces, authentic one-offs that speak of a noble past. Rudimental tools, whether they be scales that have nothing to do with precision, winders on which kilometres of yarn in a thousand shades are hand wound, long rows of wooden benches that may also support an improvised cradle, and white threads of pure cotton stretched on ancient looms, around which painted hands and flashing dark eyes compete – knot by knot – to make genuine works of art using ancient knowledge.
Nothing is “perfect” yet everything is in perfect balance and harmony, and the senses come to the fore: the eyes lose themselves as they seek to trace patterns almost erased yet somehow three-dimensional; touch is heightened and bewildered by contra- sting experiences; the natural wools seem almost “rough” next to impalpable silk, linen is almost dull when placed alongside glossy bamboo fibre... opposites that attract and complementary each other, mingling and alternating in a modernity full of contrasts. The memories carpet collection offers all the nuances and charms of nature, elegantly balanced, colours that are never gaudy, almost whispered, commencing with the whites of chalk and limewash; the greys of clay and slate, quartz and onyx; the dusty blues of agate and the deep blues of lapis lazuli; reds ranging from coral to ter- racotta; greens like jade and emerald; the golden tones of amber and topaz; browns like peat and mud, through to the black of ebony and hematite: transparent and opalescent with the sheen of silk, bamboo and soya fibre; flat and rich in wool and linen; naturally imperfect in undyed wools and deliberately imperfect in hand-dyed abrash.
The use of colours is very personal, with soft shades that vibrate amid the sheen of silk and the “dusty” patina of wool and linen. it offers a mixture of fibres and weaves, in which deliberate touches of slight imperfection are sparingly used to create carpets that also vaunt the charm of instinct and manual skill.
