Idun Upholstery fabric
This is Idun – Cultural Heritage with a Modern Twist
The tendency is getting more luxurious within home styling. Due to this we wanted to create something really elegant, opulent, individual, a bit glossy, shiny and still sophisticated. The result is four spectacular designs – Idun, Magni, Modi and Miming. The same velour construction as Håkon with two beams, one for the backing being in cotton and one for the mohair wool making the pile. Due to the free composition with flowers drawn in a big repeat it has been woven on a jacquard loom, the construction is a W-binding. The pattern is created by letting the pile go in two different directions, the line of the flower in one direction and the pile for the background in the other direction.
A beautiful inherited dress with embroidered flowers has been the inspiration for this romantic pattern. Other elements from the strong folkloric tradition in Scandinavia have also been a well of inspiration like decorative flower paintings covering wooden cabinets and chests, old weaveries and woodcutting. The huge flower of Idun, with it’s round shapes, fits very well with the softness of the mohair wool. The flowers are magnified to make the pattern contemporary. When used on a smaller scale, the design would have had a too folkloristic expression. Hence, the result is a fabric that embraces the Scandinavian cultural heritage with a modern twist. The repeat is big, 70 cm in the width and 119 cm in the height, but allows to be cut anywhere in the pattern.
In Nordic mythology, Idun is the god of youth. She is responsible for the youth apples
that are handed out every day to keep the gods young and in good shape.
