DU 30

Chairs from Poltrona Frau, Designed by Gastone Rinaldi

Product description

Designed in late 1953, the DU 30 armchair is certainly Gastone Rinaldi’s most famous piece. In fact, it was awarded the Compasso d’Oro, then known as the Compasso d’Oro-Rinascente, in 1954, the first year the prize was presented. The jury included the likes of Gio Ponti, Marco Zanuso and Alberto Rosselli. The DU 30 armchair was immediately patented and appeared on the front cover of the first edition of Stile Industria magazine in June 1954. The unitary nature of the seat and backrest results in a central cutting and stitching effect that brings to mind the contemporary works of Lucio Fontana. The DU 30 armchair has a shaped single shell in steel mesh with moulded polyurethane foam padding. Legs in bent and welded iron tubing with a textured, wrinkled black finish (BLACK RAL 9005). Equipped with a lower ‘backbone’, the shell is directly screwed to each pair of legs. The padding is in moulded polyurethane foam and the upholstery is in Pelle Frau® leather, distinctive for its central stitching which begins at the bottom of the backrest, where gentle folds are formed, and continues right along the seat. The front is embellished with hand stitching.

Concept

Designed in 1953, the DU30 chair is Gastone Rinaldi's most famous design. A confident and continuous design that produces a perfectly consistent form. The challenge was that of designing an easy-to-produce chair at industrial level that combines beauty and comfort. Gastone Rinaldi hit the bull's eye. In 1954 the DU30 won the prestigious Compasso d’Oro award - the first year the prize was awarded - and also appeared on the cover of Stile e Industria magazine.

The seat and the backrest of the DU30 is a single piece, shaped in steel sheet. The padding is in moulded polyurethane foam. The four supports, in bent iron tubing with a black finish, are directly screwed into the single shell in pairs.
The cutting and stitching on the internal part of the seat, designed to bring together the various components of the chair, bring to mind the works of Lucio Fontana, which were gaining notoriety in the art world at that time.

Poltrona Frau now proposes a faithful reproduction of the DU30 chair upholstered in leather. The range includes variants in Pelle Frau® Soul leather, Pelle Frau® Nest leather and Pelle Frau® leather from the Color System. The leather upholstery on the front of the seat is hand-stitched so it fits the shell like a glove while respecting the clean lines of the DU30.
