The DIVIDE™ collection is designed with comfort and the space conscientious person in mind. “Most sofa these days are designed for larger homes and are so deep that you end up lounging instead of sitting in them, stacking several cushions behind your back for you to sit upright…the concept was to create an upholstery collection that sat like a chair but had the same comforts of a sofa and more importantly, didn’t require you to live in a mansion for all these pieces to fit,” explained Niu. The angles of the sofa provide a variety of seating positions and the two-inch reveal that runs from the top of the seat to the depths of the piece create dramatic shadows for an added graphic effect. The function of the deep channel that separates the backrest and seat is to eliminate fabric tension commonly found with cushion-less, one-piece upholstery, which have the seat and backrest sewn together. The split allows for the seating to perform like a sofa that has cushions.
“It’s amazing to me the amount of comments I’ve received in regards to the gap,” Nolen states, “The initial reaction everyone has about the gap is that it’s a coin and trash trap but if you think about it, it’s no different than a regular cushioned sofa,” continues Niu, “Coins always seem to magically make it’s way between snug seat cushions or end up in the depths of sofa crevices…but you tell me what’s easier, flipping up all the cushions and sifting through the corners or seeing the coins in plan view and using the narrow nozzle vacuum attachment to clean things up.”
Despite it’s rigid lines and firm appearance, the DIVIDE™ collection is deceptively comfortable and uses High Resilience foam inserts throughout an Alder hardwood frame. It’s offered in standard woven contract fabric, or is also available in premium materials such as ELMO leather or the Maharam Kvadrat collection.
