BeHive, or how a concept became a genuine product
When Dirk Wynants created the BeHive lounging furniture in 2006, it was shown for the very first time as a concept during the Interieur06 Design Biennale at the Extremis stand. The reactions of both the Extremis crew on the Extremis stand and of their guests during the long ten day design biennale were extremely positive: never before had the presence during a trade fair been so relaxing and this made people genuinely happy. The following reactions from the general public were so positive that the concept became a product under development and so forth. It was shown and tested on several occasions, and similar to the car business, some concepts get accepted and refined into a finished product. BeHive now is a fully matured product which can be used in various environments. Most locations are hotels, beach clubs, lounge events and even corporate environments. It is mostly used to allow people to lounge in a surprising way, but also for brain storming sessions or meetings. Thanks to the list of options : sun roof, rain proof roof, curtains, fringe curtains and a lighting unit, the BeHive has become an ‘all in one’ piece of lounging furniture? The timeless and functional design allows that BeHive fits into any interior or exterior environment. The 4 meter diameter provides ample space for up to 16 people.
The best of other cultures as a basis for a new concept
Close your eyes for a while and imagine the mysterious oriental atmosphere of a tea house in the Middle East, where people lounge and hang around on big, soft pillows. A water pipe is being shared, soft words are being spoken, all is said… BeHive creates exactly this feeling. Take part in the hive, become the hive, ‘be the hive’, ‘Behive’. We played around a bit with the correct spelling of the word beehive, but once you have experienced BeHive no more words are needed. The concept is based on a tightly stretched fabric suspended about 60 cm above the ground. You can either lie, sit or lean against the very comfortable side cushions. The springs all around the fabric ensure that it automatically adapts to the shape of your body, thus offering maximum seating or lounging comfort.
In the centre of the hive, the fabric is attached to the table base offering equal comfort to everyone regardless of the number of people inside the BeHive. The fabric’s surface is also stable enough to walk effortlessly to one of its four exits. Thanks to its large diameter, BeHive furthermore provides enough space for everyone to lie down comfortably. Although this exceeds its recommended capacity, BeHive has already been used by more than 20 people at the same time. It is just too inviting. Users can also take place at the Corral table in the middle. The hole in the middle of the seating fabric allows a straight seating position. BeHive actually combines many types of seating furniture in one, and needs no extra lighting after sunset. The fabric covered dome transforms BeHive into a hive for like-minded souls. We haven’t yet found a solution to one problem though: if you invite friends over who used to stay late before, you will never get them home now...
Anyway: BeHive is yet again a fantastic ‘tool for togetherness’ and has a huge potential to give you wonderful and relaxing nights. And who knows, it might also reconcile opposite cultures.
