Suspended lights

From minimalist pendants to opulent chandeliers and everything in between, suspended lights offer an unprecedented variety of high-end design combined with the best quality market has to offer.

The designs range from luxurious, old world classics such as Josef Hoffmann’s Secession-era ‘Palme Harrods’, now manufactured by Woka, which combines a polished, cast-bronze frame with crystal glass to high-performance modern instruments such as the linear ‘Casablanca Perfetto suspension’, a linear, highly efficient LED light by Millelumen. ‘Ambar’, a highly adaptable spotlight by the architecture firm Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, reflects the high-tech attitude of their building designs.

Maarten van Severen’s suspended light ‘U-Line B22S’ for the manufacturer Light is a minimalist design that consists of a cord and a light-bulb. Tejo Remy’s Droog-produced ‘Milk bottle lamp’ suspends a series of light bulbs, enclosed within milk bottles as a humorous statement. Studio Job’s ‘bucket suspended lamp’ for moooi continues in this spirit and suspends an upturned, internally gold-plated steel bucket that acts as a lampshade.

Modernist classics, such as Poul Henningsen’s expressive ‘PH Artichoke glass’ for Louis Poulsen, whose textured leaves diffuse the light, to Arne Jacobsen’s understated, half-spherical, steel and aluminium ‘AJ Royal’, manufactured by the same company, are available too. Philippe Starck once again combines sensuous ornament and functional shape in the linear suspended light ‘Long & Hard’ for Flos, whose outer shell is graced by curving textures. Similarly, Powerhouse Company uses long glass diffusers to conduct the light in the ‘Tooby Multispot F32’ for Fabbian, creating an impression of glowing icicles.

Finally, while architect Steven Holl creates a multi-faceted and richly perforated lamp shade for ‘Riddled Plywood Chandelier’ for HORM.IT which is folded over a walnut frame, Nendo’s ‘BAT’ suspended light by Bisazza is a three-ring chrome steel structure that holds thirty glass-blown cones with mirror finish, and serves as an exemplary modern reinterpretation of the crystal chandelier.
