Holger Nielsen, his wife Marie & their daughter Jette Egelund

The history of Vipp begins in 1939, in the small Danish town of Randers, when Marie asked her husband Holger Nielsen to create a bin for her new hairdressing salon. Holger, who was a skilled craftsman with a keen sense of aesthetics, obviously wanted to impress his wife, and used all his talent to create a functional and beautiful pedal bin for her.

The bin, which he named Vipp, was never intended to be sold, but some of Marie’s customers were so impressed with the bin that they ordered it for their husband’s surgeries and dental clinics. The bin was only sold to the professional market until daughter of Holger and Marie, Jette Egelund, took over the company in the early nineties, and turned the bin into an international design icon.

In recent years, Vipp has exhibited at the Louvre Museum in Paris and has worked with several international designers, such as Sir Terence Conran, Christian Lacroix and Philippe Starck, to create works of art that have been auctioned off for charity.

Today, Vipp produces the classic pedal bins in various sizes, toilet brushes, a soap dispenser and a range of towels.
