De Padova Profile

De Padova Home furniture Office / Contract furniture Garden / Terrace
De Padova was founded in 1956, the year in which Maddalena and Fernando De Padova opened a small store on Via Montenapoleone in Milan, and decided to import Scandinavian furniture. For the first time, the design of Northern Europe had reached Italy: a revolution that would permanently change the way people live. “I chose things I liked, and I was blown away by certain pieces of furniture, those lines, that diversity. I think I had an instinctive sense of aesthetics… let’s say it was perfectly clear to me when something was ugly,” Maddalena De Padova says.

In the decades to follow the company grew, producing – under license, at first – the finest American collection of furnishings for the home and office, under the trademark Herman Miller, designed by C. Eames, G. Nelson and A. Girard. De Padova then began to produce its own collection, thanks to collaboration with great internationally acclaimed designers.

In 1965 the large showroom at Corso Venezia 14 was opened, for the display and sale of the collections of furniture and complements for the home and office produced by ICF De Padova. The store became a launching pad for emerging young designers like Ross Littell, Rolf Heide and Ingo Maurer, just to list a few, who always presented their objects for the first time at De Padova.
With a tireless desire to discover new things, including the Shaker furnishings in 1984, Maddalena De Padova founded “Edizioni De Padova” in 1983, later known as “è DePadova,” the brand with which she began to produce and distribute a collection of objects by some of the leading Italian and international designers: Achille Castiglioni, Vico Magistretti, Dieter Rams.

At the start of the 1990 De Padova introduced a new collection of furnishings for the workplace (home/office), completely overthrowing the traditional office concept to address new needs of taste and work that emerged ever more clearly over the course of the years, reaching the end of the decade with important new collaborations, such as the projects with Renzo Piano, who chose De Padova to furnish the cafe of the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, followed by the restaurant of the Morgan Library in New York and the headquarters of Sole24Ore in Milan.

In 2004 Maddalena De Padova received the prestigious Compasso d’Oro prize for the career, in the award’s 20th edition. The jury wrote: "The great commitment of Maddalena De Padova to the production and spread of design, as a shared culture and point of exchange in different international contexts, represents a unique case of consistency and quality in our country.”

In 2006 De Padova celebrated its 50th anniversary with a book and an installation that retraced its history through encounters, interviews, stories and images. The next year, De Padova organized an international design competition, in collaboration with Designboom.com, to commemorate Vico Magistretti, the world-renowned Italian architect and designer.

De Padova, in January 2008, also acquired the brand Zoltan, created at the start of the 1990s thanks to the entrepreneurial spirit and intuition of Luca De Padova. From the outset this firm made products to combine perfectly with the offerings of De Padova. This operation has made it possible to expand the collection, with a particular focus on furnishing complements at particularly reasonable prices.

In recent years new collaborations have strengthened De Padova’s product development research, thanks to internationally acclaimed and emerging designers like Patricia Urquiola, Marzo Zanuso Jr, Paolo Pallucco, D’Urbino-Lomazzi, Nendo, Damian Williamson, Lorenz*Kaz, Naoto Fukasawa, Jasper Morrison, Monica Förster, Vincent Van Duysen, Philippe Nigro, Luca Nichetto, Aksu/Suardi, Michele De Lucchi and Form Us With Love, among others.

Starting on 1 August 2013 Luca De Padova has become the Sole Administrator of the De Padova company. Previously its CEO, he initially worked alongside his sister Valeria, who has decided to move on. Consolidating complete ownership, he confirms his commitment to guarantee continuity, keeping the ideas and passion that have always characterized this family business alive.

Luca De Padova explains: “My position represents a passage from one generation to the next, a situation of continuity, but with a particular focus on the changes of a world that is constantly evolving. My main concern will be to make the company increasingly dynamic and competitive, striving for excellence with greater harmony and motivation in all the parts of the firm.”

The introduction of new managerial figures is part of the logic to achieve objectives that are enabling the company to lay the solid industrial groundwork for future growth. Together with his staff, Luca De Padova continues with the plan of corporate restructuring covering development of all the operative activities in the production area, and investments to support the brand and its visibility in the world.

In over 50 years of activity De Padova has kept faith with its original philosophy: design as a tool to spread emotion. The De Padova collection comes from the inspiration of the great design classics, from the love of fine craftsmanship and objects of memory, from research combined with innovation. This is what makes the De Padova style so unique.
