AKABA was established in 1986 by three partners who, with more enthousiasm than economical means, decided to get together in order to create a furniture company that had four main goals: design, internationality, corporate image and the creation of new jobs.
From the beginning, AKABA stood out for its avant-garde designs and prestigious designers and artists as Javier Mariscal, the Basque sculptor Andrés Nagel, the sevillian designer Santiago Miranda or the architect and engineer Santiago Calatrava, collaborated in its first collections with exclusive designs which made AKABA very well-known on an international scale.
Beginning of the 90's, AKABA starts a progressive transformation orientating its products to the contract market, although keeping design as a differentiating factor, and are from then on, and still are, the main markets successfully approached in a new phase of great expansion and growth supported by new designs.
After 15 years, the AKABA project has grown and matured and we can say that it is today a reality with the following features:
A manufacturing surface of 5.000 sq. meters between its premises in Lasarte and Usurbil.
From the 3 people that started the project in 1986, it has grown up to a labour force of 85 people in the year 2000.
AKABA exhibits in the most important Fairs in the world and the AKABA corporate and brand image is already of reference for the competitors as well as clear proof of the creative capacity and personality of our country.
AKABA exports more than 50% of its production to countries with high quality standards such as the United States, Great Britain, Netherlands, France, Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland, Germany, etc., and even more distant markets such as Australia, Japan, Singapore and China.
AKABA has received important design awards. In 1997 the Delta de Oro for the HOLA chair and in the year 2000 the National Award for Design for its professional career, both maximum awards in Spain in design.
Besides its standard furniture collection, mainly chairs and tables for contract use, AKABA has also the capacity of design and development of special projects. Thanks to its possibility of doing custom-made designs, AKABA has been able in the last few years to accomplish significant projects such as the seating program of the Sevilla Airport, designed by Rafael Moneo, the student dormitories of the Universidad Autónoma of Barcelona and of the Universidad de Alcalá in Madrid, the benches of all the stations of the modern Bilbao Underground, a Norman Foster project, 100 Telefónica shops (Spanish Telecom) along the capitals of all the Spanish provinces, the furniture of the new Bilbao Airport Terminal, a designed by the architect and engineer Santiago Calatrava and finally the seating program for the new Köln-Bonn Airport Terminal in Germany designed by the prestigious architect Helmut Jahn.
Behind all these international successes that have made AKABA triple its turnover in the last five years, there is a young and dynamic team and a company philosophy based on people, focused on the market and committed with its economical and social entourage.
Bearing in mind this commitment with the economical and social entourage, AKABA sponsors several activities, Handball Women Team Honour League of the Bera Bera club in San Sebastián, the Gastronomic Community Centre of the Basque Country and the baseball team of Somoto (Nicaragua).
AKABA is a company certified according to the ISO 9001 rules, is ecologically clean, that it takes part in the EKOSCAN project promoted by Ihobe a society belonging to the Basque Government for the environmental protection, and it has among its short term objectives to obtain the ISO 14000 certificate.
Although it is a young project, AKABA is very optimistic about its future and expects, during the next decade, to consolidate its leadership position in the high standard design furniture for contract and special projects.
