Fiam celebrates its fortieth anniversary this year, confirming the prestige of a brand that has earned its place as a benchmark of international design by dedicating a genuine culture to glass, expressing the beauty and allure of a timeless material that can reflect the things around us and multiply our points of view on reality. Technology and design, reality and imagination are the dualities central to the story of Fiam, where everything revolves around a single ideal: to give glass a key role in the design world.
During these 40 years a large number of original, leading-edge technologies have been developed within the firm, but it has been love and passion that have inspired the master glass-makers, enabling them to transmit a unique character to every product and generate pure emotion. Some of Fiam’s products and works are in the collections of top international museums, they have received many awards, films and television shows use them in their sets, and many famous people have chosen them for their homes.
Past, present and future, a history powered by an idea constant through time.
From product collections to genuine objects of desire for collection: Fiam’s creations have written the history of contemporary design thanks to the creative input of top designers, who have enjoyed working with a material with infinite expressive potential, supported by the company’s ceaseless technological research.During these 40 years a large number of original, leading-edge technologies have been developed within the firm, but it has been love and passion that have inspired the master glass-makers, enabling them to transmit a unique character to every product and generate pure emotion. Some of Fiam’s products and works are in the collections of top international museums, they have received many awards, films and television shows use them in their sets, and many famous people have chosen them for their homes.

To make this 40th birthday even more special, the company has decided to work with four international star architects, whose designs were presented during the Salone del Mobile in Milan.
To express the company’s tradition and know-how to best effect, the designers’ works were all in the same emblematic category: mirrors. An archetype-object with an infinity of symbolic associations, the mirror seems almost to encapsulate the brand’s sense of its own history, a tale of successes where every achievement has always been the outcome of a unique shared understanding between those who create, produce and use design. The designers have attempted to combine the memory of a priceless tradition with the continual search for new forms of expression for glass in contemporary home design.

The two Rosy and Lucy wall mirrors, designed by world-famous architects Doriana and Massimiliano Fuksas, are beautiful, unique pieces made entirely from glass. Rosy consists of a round body surrounded by two off-centre rings; it is inspired by lunar images - an eclipse, or a lake set in the moon’s silvery surface. Lucy is a “reflective sculpture”, a core contained within a structure formed by three large irregularly shaped petals. In both mirrors, the frames, in silver back-painted glass, are of fundamental importance and are inspired by feminine, sensual lines. These objects are intended for use in creative, highly personalised home interior design schemes.

The The Wing collection, designed by Daniel Libeskind, reinterprets the mirror as a magical object that modifies space. With mystical signs on its surface, the mirror has the fascinating power to convey the mystery of what it reflects. “To reawaken the eyes of the sleepers” said the blind bard, attributing the mirror the footprint of a dynamic sign on the faces of its observer. So The Wing carries suggestions of the enigma of reawakening on the wing of mankind’s dreams and desires, interpreting the “deconstructionism” of which Libeskind is a leading exponent.

After a very successful start, Xavier Lust continues his expressive use of Fiam’s glass. He extends the theme of mirrors with Caldeira, inspired by a volcanic lake: glass melted at high temperatures becomes a mirror that encapsulates the tranquillity of water and the turbulent force of heat. The transparent material takes on the shape of a lava flow, in a piece of great emotional impact.

Caadre, the mirror by Philippe Starck, provides yet more proof that technology is Fiam’s most distinctive feature. Available in various sizes and finishes, the absolute novelty is the unusual, attractive version of the mirror with integral television, which combines beauty and technology. In any variant, Caadre is always a unique product, full of personality.

For Fiam, the four designers have interpreted the identity and values of an international brand that is still aware of its roots, creating objects that can be safely defined as genuine works of art.
