Before the advent of the electrical light bulb oil lamps were the main source of light for middle class dwellings. So a wide variety of oil lamps was created throughout the ages. This version represents the simplest version where a piece of wick is lit, floating on the oil itself. Despite the simplicity of the technical principle the pendant exhales an air of dignity.
Pendants like this have been documented from as early as the 14th century. We know of a mural in a German town hall depicting this exact version of oil lamp.
