Beth Galí incorporated a curved support into the Línea handrail to support and hold bicycles securely.
The bicycle was invented by Count Mede de Sivrac to relieve the boredom of the 16th century French nobles at the court of Versailles. There are more than 800 million bicycles in the world today. This is double the number of cars. Because of the lack of suitable places to park them, it is not surprising to see them on pavements, tied to street lamps, fences or trees.
From the restructuring project of the streets in the historic centre of s-Hertogenbosch, in Holland, the architect Beth Galí answered the growing need of cities for bicycle racks with the Bici Línea rack.
The Línea handrail is the structural origin of this bicycle rack and is very much used in countries with a long bicycle tradition such as Holland and Belgium. It is made of a stretch of Línea handrail, to which curved tubes have been added to act as a support and a fastening mechanism for the bicycles. Its shape is minimalist and this is important as it answers the need to secure the bicycle not only by the wheel, but also by the frame to prevent theft.
It is made in a single material; stainless steel. The modular design allows for installation in several ways: individual without handrail, in alignment, with arms at one or both sides and as a continuation to a handrail, according to needs. It is also a robust unit, any of the parts of which may be easily changed.
Support handrail made of a AISI 304 stainless steel polished platen, joined by Allen countersunk-head stainless steel screws, handrail and tubular arms of 84 and 51 mm and 2 mm thick in the same material. These are joined to each other by A2 stainless steel screws.
Because of its modular design, this unit may be combined in many ways. It is delivered disassembled in two parts: the supports and the tubes. Assembly instructions are included with the unit. The support and the lower arm are sunk into the ground. The supports are fixed with anchors for concrete using 35 mm bolts for the foot and 16 mm bolts for the arm. This unit does not need any kind of maintenance.
