Based in the UK, bark offers a fresh take on bespoke, British-made furniture. Our designs reflect the mid-century modern era, when confidence in proportion, modesty in detail and simplicity of construction were the defining characteristics.
“Our passion for the truly great furniture designers and architects of the twentieth century, lead to us spending countless hours researching the essence of what these industry heroes brought to modern design. As cabinet makers our love of hardwood and the patina created by the way it ages make solid wood construction the natural choice to remind us just how good furniture can look.”
All bark furniture is made by hand and to order and comes in a range of hardwoods and fabrics. This enables clients to specify everything from the wood and upholstery to the dimensions of each piece. All the wood used in our furniture comes from sustainable sources and is FSC or PESC certified.
bark is a collaboration between husband and wife team, Jonathan Walter and Lakshmi Bhaskaran.
Jonathan started designing furniture in 2002, while studying cabinet making at a school in Sao Paulo. In 2006 he moved to Devon to continue his studies at the David Savage School of Fine Furniture, and has been making bespoke furniture ever since. Earlier this year Jonathan set up his own workshop in Cornwall, from where he and Lakshmi now work.
Lakshmi has been heavily involved in the design industry for over ten years. An established writer and the author of five design titles, in 2008 her passion for design saw her embark on a new career as a designer-maker, studying at the David Savage School of Fine Furniture, where she met Jonathan.
