Newsletter 12.2011

Dear Readers,

While drafting this year's last newsletter, Architonic's editorial team took into consideration the fast-approaching festive season and we thought that with Christmas less than two weeks away, you might either be still in the quest for the perfect present or, should the Christmas preparations begin to overwhelm you, burying yourself underground might seem like a tranquil alternative. You can learn more about both topics in our online magazine 'News&Trends'.

If you tend towards the latter option, we would suggest to take along the new documentary about the much-celebrated design duo Charles and Ray Eames titled 'Eames: The Architect and the Painter' as an ideal entertainment while staying 'sub terra'.

What's more, as every month we give you an insight into our extensive product and material library and spotlight the latest and most interesting architectural projects.

So here's what's in store:

- Cooking with taste: well designed household appliances
- Architonic Fair Appearences 2012
- Underground Structures
- An excerpt from our product and material library
- Documentary on the famous designer couple Charles and Ray Eames
- The latest projects from Architonic's 'Architecture & Design' section

Cooking with taste: well designed household appliances
During the age of the economic miracle electrical household appliances became an integral part of every home as kitchen aids to the modern housewife. There were only a handful of manufacturers and the head designers and engineers of the market leaders worked on the principle of creating timeless and functional design, which makes some of these appliances coveted vintage items today. Some designs of the period are nowadays even being reissued as retro pieces featuring present-day technology.

In The Time Machine, HG Wells wrote: "there is a tendency to utilize underground space for the less ornamental purposes of civilization.” In that book, Wells imagined a future in which industry had been completely located underground, whilst above ground all was green and leafy. At the end of the 19th century, it was perhaps understandable to imagine a future where this was the case. After all, as Wells put it, referring to the working class areas of London: "Even now, does not an East-end worker live in such artificial conditions as practically to be cut off from the natural surface of the earth?” Instead, something very different has happened to the building of structures beneath our cities...

He was an architectural school dropout who never got his license and she was a painter that rarely painted yet the husband-and-wife powerhouse of Charles and Ray Eames has become one of the most significant creative practices in the history of modern design. Now, for the first time since their deaths, filmmakers Jason Cohn and Bill Jersey make ‘a definitive and unprecedented cinematic foray into the private world of the Renaissance-style studio that Charles and Ray Eames conceived in a cavernous warehouse on a gritty street in Venice Beach, CA' in their recently-released feature-length documentary, Eames: The Architect and the Painter.
