The model was originally designed for the Kronprinzessin Cecilie ocean liner for use in the breakfast room of the Kaiser first-class suite. Riemerschmid, Bruno Paul and Joseph Maria Olbrich were the only artists outside of Bremen, the ship's home port, who were invited to be part of designing the interior schemes. In Dekorative Kunst, vol. 16, 1908, p. 86, it was commented that in Riemerschmid's breakfast room "there is a very special romance in the mood of this small room, which none of the other designers of the first class cabins has been able to match."
