Melting the pleasure of conviviality and the attitude to host with the need for functionality, also because there are kids in the family: this is the challenge taken up by architect Daniele Marcotulli for the renovation of a large apartment in a historic building in the Mazzini district in Rome, where the bourgeois tradition of the capital is animated by an intense working and commercial life. To meet the owners' wishes, the project subverts the initial setting of the rooms and the long corridors, to recreate a home guided by light and fluid relationships between functions. The house is organized into two parallel environments: the access one, dedicated to the large living area and the steel kitchen at the back, and the second, more intimate, divided into three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a closet. What was a tired and dark timber Californian Bungalow now sparkles from the leafy street. A typical free-standing timber period home on roughly 420sqm faced south and as a result was dark and introspective. Our design response was to turn the house back on itself, and build across the rear boundary thus creating two inner garden spaces. A low level, timber lined and glazed ‘hall’ creates a link between the period house and the new lofty, north facing addition.

The heritage building was gutted and re-furbished to house two bedrooms, family bathroom, and main bedroom suite. While period details were retained to be true to the heritage character, a sense of contemporary style was also added across the original home with all spaces being refurbished. Stepping into the new addition which houses a multi-purpose room, kitchen, living, dining and utility spaces, you can’t help but focus on the internal garden and entertaining deck.

The name of the building ‘Drakoni’ was given in honor of the family that built it and has been in its possession for more than six generations and is directly connected with the structure of the house that is entirely built from the local hard stone ‘Akoni’. The project consists of the restoration of a stone-built building of 1864 located in the proposed traditional settlement of Pines in Elounda, Crete. The village was first inhabited in 1400-1550 AD by the Venetians. The pointed arch located inside the building dates back to that time. This arc was found in 1864 by Mavrogiorgis Drakonakis (six generations behind the current owner) a stock and land farmer and built his house on the basis of it. It firstly contained one room and a courtyard, and later was shaped over the years into a house until 1920. Since 1920, the house has not been re-inhabited and remained for years as a stable for animals.

For Villa A, the objective was to instill an immediate sense of tranquility, reminiscent of a day spa or wellness center. Surrounded by traditional residential forms, the focus was to create a relaxed yet elevated sanctuary that was sensitive to the natural setting, while also having its own character. The reference to the double-gable silhouette pays homage to the existing context, reinterpreting the use of timber weatherboard panelling vertically instead of horizontally. Bureau Fraai designs a psychological practice with a ‘labyrinth’ pattern floor in a monumental chapel in the city centre of Amsterdam.

Right across the Artis Zoo in the stately Plantage neighbourhood in Amsterdam, Bureau Fraai converted the monumental chapel ‘de Nieuwe Sint Jacob’ that was once part of a mental institution into a multicultural psychological practice, named Adagio. The practice distinguishes itself from other practices by offering treatments in other languages than Dutch to its multicultural clientele, with a special focus on Latin languages.

The architects made an interior design with a ‘labyrinth’ patterned floor and mainly circular materials, carefully embracing the existing monumental interior by respecting and preserving the beautiful characteristics of the chapel.

The project describes a garden-house for a family as a refuge and meeting place. Where estudio karina kreth collaborated with estudio arquitecturam on the vision, and identity of the project. This made that, in its center, the patio space that intertwines the different house levels, needed to break with verticality this flat linearity, for which we projected a linear railing of sorts, designed in a large color plane. Arch house, named for the front door and the arc-ing ceiling in the living room, is the family home of our Principal Designer, Susannah Holmberg.

The home is tudor-style in a historic neighborhood of Salt Lake. While the goal was to renovate and modernize the 98-year-old house, her main priority was to keep and preserve the old world charm.

The hope was to create a space that Is inviting, colorful and full of life. Artful but never precious.

A small house refuses to be banal. three levels play slightly different geometrical games. its spaces are assembled out of small gestures: sloping ceilings, curved and staggered walls, episodic double heights, and lofty chimneys. The ground floor accommodates the main living space open to the garden, concealing the circulation and secondary spaces behind a subtle wall. The middle level is organized around a central hallway from which a spiral staircase takes one to the attic. The house is a collection of episodes and compelling fragments. While the spaces on the three levels are different, colors and coats of paint bring the project together. the house presents an abundance of textures and patterns. White and dark blue stripes cover window shutters, kitchens, and multiple cabinets with their handles slightly exaggerated. Simply magical, how the installation by light artist Christopher T. Hunziker winds its way along the alley of Junkerbifangstrasse in Zofingen, giving the place its own identity at any time of day or night. Particular challenges were the cable suspensions between the buildings as well as the structural details for the 150m long "light snake", taking into account wind, weather and expansion. The historical Villa Bianca, designed by architect Jan Kotěra in 1910-11, underwent numerous modifications since its construction. The latest was a radical renovation completed in 2003 according to the project by Dutch architect Erick van Egeraat. The exterior of the villa was restored to a form inspired by Jan Kotěra's original design, but the interior, in contrast to the historical exterior, reflected the turn-of-the-millennium period. No elements from the original era were preserved, except for replicas of mullioned windows in the apartment’s interior, that reminded one of being in an early 20th-century modernist villa.

Vanderbilt is a project in a building designed by COOKFOX. According to COOKFOX it was “Designed to pull in nature at all scales for the health and well-being of its residents”

We also wanted the space to feel a little dreamy and utopian. For this we kept things very soft and neutral, allowing the artworks and greenery to command viewing.

The design was kept more minimal to allow the user/viewer to spend time with each unique piece while the use of curves carry you gently through the space.

With this headline, Marion and Paul Franck, a couple with three young children - Leo, Romeo and Zöe - who until then had lived, due to his work in the aeronautical industry, five years in Toulouse, another two in Reunion Island, one in Washington and the last four in London, presented themselves in the studio at the end of 2022. A small inhabited space with an old, somewhat decadent building on the outskirts of the city, in a medium-populated residential area, has been completely transformed to become the new home of a very young couple. The project consisted in the demolition of the previous house and the construction of a new highly energy efficient residential building, characterized by large and bright internal spaces, especially in the living area.

At a design level, the various constraints given by the specific position of the previous building together with the south and west views characterized by proximity to neighborhood, made the process to arrive at the definitive solution very long and difficult.

A continuous contrast between dark and light: the beauty of one is defined by the absence of the other. The interior design of this house was commissioned by a professional couple, an instrumentalist and an expert in Italian artisanal perfumes. Their working experiences share an instinctive propensity for experimentation that they want to express it at home as well: a space with bold tones that reflects their lifestyle without compromises.

The project takes inspiration from the interiors of a historic Milanese nightclub of the 1970s, where the unconventional use of steel sheets was an innovation for the time. The effect of this material convinced the clients from the beginning, both for its reference to the musical panorama and for its ability to manifest itself with shades of very varied colors and shapes.

This refurbishment of a 1910's two-bedroom cottage included a rework of the kitchen and bathroom and the reinstatement of Arts and Crafts details to the original house. For the interior the contemporary interventions are rich in colour and materiality, referencing a palette of heritage hues.

Externally, the new garden provides a verdant backdrop to the living space with plants creating privacy from neighbouring properties. A borrowed landscape of mature gum trees is drawn into the compact garden from the park beyond.

This small project was undertaken over a period of a number years. The cottage was built on the western slope of the Pomezní hřeben in the Krkonoše Mountains. The surrounding terrain is sloping, descending quite steeply into the valley, and the land is situated at an altitude of approximately 1000 meters above sea level. The clients' wish was to renovate an apartment with an area of 172 m2 so that family members and guests would have privacy, and enough space for work, rest, and storage. The remodelling was supposed to be moderate, respectful, timeless in aesthetics, delicate, and minimalist.

The apartment is located in a late Secession building in Prague, but the original interior was surprisingly not decorative. There is a distinctive interior element, the paneling in the bay windows. As part of the remodelling, it was essential for us to make the original valuable elements stand out and sensitively supplement them with new ones. This was also reflected in the layout solution.

We straightened the double doors to the rooms on one axis to create an enfilade of four rooms. The great advantage of thinking more freely about the individual zones is undoubtedly the reinforced concrete skeleton, which allows the rooms to be connected more easily. The layout modification was only minimal from a construction point of view, but thanks to it the bedroom has its own bathroom niche hidden behind sliding glass. In the vestibule it was simply a matter of moving a part of the wall to create a walk-through wardrobe. Probably the most significant intervention was the connection of the two main rooms, the kitchen and the living room, which are situated facing the street. Very close to Retiro Park, we have transformed a 200-square-meter apartment into a visual "trompe l'oeil" where everything can be hidden or revealed thanks to a lattice screens, folding screens, and a completely custom-designed layout. Paneled walls, folding screens, and sliding doors equally define the aesthetics and layout, with pieces designed by them completing the promised timeless look. We demolished all the walls of the original dwelling and decided to create a central interior cube from which the rest of the rooms stem. The goal was to preserve and reveal the historical origins of the house. The apartment is dominated by the main living space, a salon with a carved wooden Renaissance ceiling. The room was divided by a partition at some point in the past. This dividing wall was demolished to free the original space in its entirety. The original wall paint was uncovered and it revealed a deep crimson colour. The determining factor here is the darkness of the surfaces. The wood beam ceiling and the walls feature dark, saturated tones. A dark space embraces people, and it creates an atmosphere of closeness when compared with a light one.

The existing apartment, measuring 85 sqm, is the result of the division into two a large apartment with two opposed façades to Enric Granados Street and a generous interior courtyard in the Ensanche Derecho of Barcelona. The outcome of the division distorted the original flat, which enjoyed its access at its center. Now, the access is located at the interior end of the apartment, driving the natural flow towards the exit to a spacious interior gallery room overlooking the big interior courtyard. The existing flooring, consisting of a rich variety of ‘nolla’ mosaics with drawings and colors of great value, was preserved.

In a span of just over 6 meters, it was decided to place two bedrooms on the inner part of the apartment, enjoying light and ventilation from two interior courtyards, allowing the living room, kitchen, and dining spaces to enjoy a more generous connection to the backyard. Located on Severiano Ballesteros Street in Santander, Spain, the restaurant was conceived as part of an architectural complex that also includes an Oceanographic Center designed by Vicente Roig Forner and Ángel Hernández Morales, built between 1975 and 1978.

The original building consists of two square bodies connected by a canopy, with a concrete structure. The interior is distributed over three floors around a central courtyard covered by a vault of paraboloid membranes. In 2003, a renovation and extension was carried out which included the extension of the west façade and the roof of the terrace with a pyramidal aluminum structure, thus altering the initial conception of the building.

The project provides the museum with a new space on the second floor to house its restaurant and terrace. To accomplish this, the project involved the creation of a new volume that provides a solution to the pathologies present in the roof and façade of the building.

Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, the owners purchased this former multi-family dwelling without ever setting foot inside. A dilapidated structure, yet with a charming facade; envisioning a complete renovation meant the building could be tailored entirely to their preferences.

Location was also a non-issue: a southeast-facing urban garden with a view of a church, a walking park, and two beautiful old beech trees meant no concerns about rear neighbors.

The two outdated apartments were transformed into a single-family home, crowned with an additional floor during the renovation. This not only harmonized with the streetscape but also provided the opportunity to optimize all spaces for long-term occupancy.
