To meet the owners' wishes, the project subverts the initial setting of the rooms and the long corridors, to recreate a home guided by light and fluid relationships between functions. The house is organized into two parallel environments: the access one, dedicated to the large living area and the steel kitchen at the back, and the second, more intimate, divided into three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a closet. The two areas come into contact through a central spine wall, somehow hidden by a custom-equipped system which, by alternating wooden containing parts and mirrored surfaces, creates illus…

Glenmorgan House de Bryant Alsop | Detached houses https://www.architonic.com/en/project/bryant-alsop-glenmorgan-house/20763144 Sun, 21 Apr 2024 00:00:00 +0200
What was a tired and dark timber Californian Bungalow now sparkles from the leafy street. A typical free-standing timber period home on roughly 420sqm faced south and as a result was dark and introspective. Our design response was to turn the house back on itself, and build across the rear boundary thus creating two inner garden spaces. A low level, timber lined and glazed ‘hall’ creates a link between the period house and the new lofty, north facing addition.

The heritage building was gutted and re-furbished to house two bedrooms, family bathroom, and main bedroom suite. While period details were retained to be true to the heritage character, a sense of contemporary style was also added across the original home with all spaces being refurbished. Stepping into the new addition which houses a multi-purpose room, kitchen, living, dining and utility spaces, you can’t help but focus on the internal garden and entertaining deck.

The cathedral ceiling and high-level glazing…

The project consists of the restoration of a stone-built building of 1864 located in the proposed traditional settlement of Pines in Elounda, Crete. The village was first inhabited in 1400-1550 AD by the Venetians. The pointed arch located inside the building dates back to that time. This arc was found in 1864 by Mavrogiorgis Drakonakis (six generations behind the current owner) a stock and land farmer and built his house on the basis of it. It firstly contained one room and a courtyard, and later was shaped over the years into a house until 1920. Since 1920, the house has not been re-inhabited and remained for years as a stable for animals.

The design strategy is based on the idea of restoring and reusing the building in…

Aptly named "Layà", meaning freedom in Filipino, these residences embody the essence of liberty.

The vision for Layà Villas was to craft a serene sanctuary distinct from the suburban norm—a pair of architecturally designed duplexes that defy local expectations, akin to twins flaunting entirely unique personalities through divergent interior schemes.

For Villa A, the objective was to instill an immediate sense of tranquility, reminiscent of a day spa or wellness center. Achieved through neutral, non-white finishes, organic curves, and a delicate interplay of soft contours against textured tiles, the Turkish marble in the kitchen mimics the natural ebb and flow of the nearby sand and ocean. Handmade Moroccan bejmat tiles provide a textured contrast, while the master ensuit…

Minotti for the sofa, Molteni for the table, Vitra for the dining chairs, Snaidero for the kitchen, Poltrona Frau for the bed, Molteni for the wardrobe and finally Emu for the outdoor table. A varied and modern proposal, to give the whole a balanced, typically contemporary look, in the name of elegance, minimalism and rigor. A chromatic game, in which the contrasts between the white of some furniture and floors and the black of furniture, accessories and appliances such as tables, chairs, oven, cushions and curtains stand out. A mix that strikes the eye with extreme naturalness, creating a welcoming, comfortable atmosphere, able to inspire the mind and spirit."

Changing "The Big Apple" for the Mediterranean is more than an act of will, it is an intricate challenge. Lately, more and more people have decided to cross the ocean to start a new life, and many of them choose a city that beats rakings about the best cities to live in: Valencia, a cozy and walkable city with pristine weather, and a huge festive tradition.

We live in the cities at a certain point in their history. They grow and change as the people that live inside, in a constant motion that forces you to change with them. The protagonists of this story, a family formed by a couple and a playful puppy, decided that it was the right time to change the calculated rationalism of the American Mid-Century for the Mediterranean cultural palimpsest.

Finding a good starting point was crucial. The perfect one is always before the purchase, so no hidden features can conditionate the result. After a good briefing and a detailed study of…

Flix House de gon architects | Living space https://www.architonic.com/en/project/gon-architects-flix-house/20760729 Thu, 11 Apr 2024 00:00:00 +0200 The current perception of the attics in the city center stands out for their potentially attractive character: they are elevated places, floating above the rooftops, partially visible structures from the street, not easily accessible, and sometimes associated with a bohemian life. The spatial configuration of the attic, very different from the rest of the building floors, responds to urban regulations for the top of the building, which generally features sloping roofs and large rooms with few partitions and low height. This is Roberto's home, the owner of the Flix house, a 42 m2 under-the roof located on the sixth floor without an elevator in a building in the center of Madrid, built in 1900, very close to the busy Callao square. The hall, originally built in 1973, was last remodelled in 2007. The main aim of the latest redesign was to break up the cold character of the space. Inspired by the Neustadt-Hirschmatt quarter, we developed the “Quarter within a Quarter” concept that integrates elements of the diverse neighbourhood into the design. Among the new features is a large “cloud” on the ceiling that counteracts the hall-like feel of the space and reflects the actual weather conditions in Lucerne. The hall accommodates consultations in various places: at mobile high tables, semi-private pergolas and consultation rooms. The pergolas are inspired by the typical perimeter block buildings in the neighbourhood; the consultation rooms by four popular city spots. The cement look of the walls and numerous plants emanate the…

In the design project for the Madonna delle Grazie Parish Complex of the Diocese of Lodi in Dresano, entrusted to the architects Vincenzo Corvino and Giovanni Multari, the central feature of the entire construction is the perfection of the geometric shapes, an unchanging aspect that conceals complex meanings. The architectural design of the parish complex derives from a composition of two basic geometric shapes. The circle - the purest of elements, symbolises the spirit and the immortal nature of the soul, on which this example of sacral architecture is built, while the rectangle of the base symbolises definition, delineation and the joining of the four compass points, featuring a central cloister around which the other parish buildings a…

Surrounded by traditional residential forms, the focus was to create a relaxed yet elevated sanctuary that was sensitive to the natural setting, while also having its own character. The reference to the double-gable silhouette pays homage to the existing context, reinterpreting the use of timber weatherboard panelling vertically instead of horizontally. The practice distinguishes itself from other practices by offering treatments in other languages than Dutch to its multicultural clientele, with a special focus on Latin languages.

The architects made an interior design with a ‘labyrinth’ patterned floor and mainly circular materials, carefully embracing the existing monumental interior by respecting and preserving the beautiful characteristics of the chapel.

The chapel, originally part of a mental institution established in 1866, was just newly renovated whereafter Bureau Fraai made an interior design. Where estudio karina kreth collaborated with estudio arquitecturam on the vision, and identity of the project. This vision located the emphasis in the “runway” entrance with the large window frame located in the end with almost an infinite view. This made that, in its center, the patio space that intertwines the different house levels, needed to break with verticality this flat linearity, for which we projected a linear railing of sorts, designed in a large color plane. The decision to manipulate the verticality of the structure, added to the decision to frame certain carpentry according to their use in the program, allowed us to decipher where to locate the public and the private areas in relation to the amount and the way they received sunlight. Nature in its materials, accompanies the exterior and open views, and makes the house visually attractive through the change of seasons. The natural materials…

House Without Idea de Fala Atelier | Detached houses https://www.architonic.com/en/project/fala-atelier-house-without-idea/20760289 Mon, 25 Mar 2024 00:00:00 +0100 A small house refuses to be banal. three levels play slightly different geometrical games. its spaces are assembled out of small gestures: sloping ceilings, curved and staggered walls, episodic double heights, and lofty chimneys. The ground floor accommodates the main living space open to the garden, concealing the circulation and secondary spaces behind a subtle wall. The middle level is organized around a central hallway from which a spiral staircase takes one to the attic. The house is a collection of episodes and compelling fragments. While the spaces on the three levels are different, colors and coats of paint bring the project together. the house presents an abundance of textures and patterns. White and dark blue stripes cover window shutters, kitchens, and multiple cabinets with their handles slightly exaggerated. A dotted carpet of wooden floor is repeated on every level, serving as another unifying element. Each door has a cut-out of a dark green circle painted on it. Th…

The cable bracings were planned and executed by Kummler+Matter EVT AG. An extruded aluminium profile was specially developed and bent for the light snake, which can accommodate the IP 67 encapsulated LED light snake. The result is a design mix of forms and colors that dialogue with the historic context and the environment”. The latest was a radical renovation completed in 2003 according to the project by Dutch architect Erick van Egeraat. The exterior of the villa was restored to a form inspired by Jan Kotěra's original design, but the interior, in contrast to the historical exterior, reflected the turn-of-the-millennium period. No elements from the original era were preserved, except for replicas of mullioned windows in the apartment’s interior, that reminded one of being in an early 20th-century modernist villa.

We designed a new interior for the original villa. It is contemporary without a historicising approach, but with the ambition to establish a connection to the historical architecture of the house. We believe that the dialogue between the old and new, in this case between the villa and its interior, can revolve around the authenticity in architecture and the…

It caresses the carefully chosen finishes, delicately highlighting the three-dimensional ribbed panels applied both to the bookcase dividers and cabinet doors and to the kitchen island. The layout, while influenced by the dynamic presence of the convex volume, exudes a tranquil ambiance, owing to the gentle hues of light wood finishes, notably birch and linden. Upon entry, one's gaze is naturally drawn to the glass door framing a venerable tree visible from the bedroom, infusing the space with a connection to the outdoors. The accompanying bookcase features varying depths, ingeniously correcting the irregularity of the existing back wall while providing versatile storage solutions for an array of objects. Certain sections, in particular those positioned in front of the bathroom, offer discreet enclosures ideal for…

According to COOKFOX it was “Designed to pull in nature at all scales for the health and well-being of its residents”

We also wanted the space to feel a little dreamy and utopian. For this we kept things very soft and neutral, allowing the artworks and greenery to command viewing.

The design was kept more minimal to allow the user/viewer to spend time with each unique piece while the use of curves carry you gently through the space.
OAD Interiors

Jardim Velho Apartment de André Simão & Nuno Bessa | Living space https://www.architonic.com/en/project/andre-simao-amp-nuno-bessa-jardim-velho-apartment/20759361 Sun, 24 Mar 2024 00:00:00 +0100 Located in the historic center of Barcelos, in the north of Portugal, facing one of the oldest squares in the city (the “Old Garden”), this apartment is on the top floor of a collective housing building. Both the irregular plan - resulting from the building's fit into the dense urban fabric - and the multiple sunlight fronts available, served as the motto for the project. The social area of the apartment is a lively open space organized as a game between cabinets or open shelves, the expressionist shape of the ceilings, an organic and curvilinear step, all dancing around a monolithic piece of furniture (used for storage, TV/media stand and bar), which is the gravitational center of the project. In this game of tensions, the protagonism of each element is determined by its shape and also by its color or material (from white and inexpressive wall plans, through blue lacquered wooden panels to large surfaces of natural “sucupira” wood - used on the floor, on the upper part of the ceil…

With this headline, Marion and Paul Franck, a couple with three young children - Leo, Romeo and Zöe - who until then had lived, due to his work in the aeronautical industry, five years in Toulouse, another two in Reunion Island, one in Washington and the last four in London, presented themselves in the studio at the end of 2022. The difference with previous destinations is that Madrid now appears to be the place they have chosen to settle permanently. And they do so by acquiring a 151 m2 dwelling located on the top floor of a residential building constructed at the beginning of the 20th century in the Justicia neighborhood, near Gran Vía and Chueca, in the center of Madrid. With a marked longitudinal character and a floor plan organized around three courtyards, paradoxically, despite being a penthouse, the dwelling does not establish notable links with the surrounding urban profile. The typical tapestry of streets weaving through a chessboard of homes leads to vast plots offering glimpses of the nearby natural splendor. Right here, we found ample space to nurture a concept of a ground-level house seamlessly connected to its garden.

Veiled beneath the facade's surface, which defines the house's square footprint, hides an intricate internal structure. Breaking away from the conventional blueprint of a compact house expanded by terraces, an open residential landscape emerges, complete with buffer zones, organically extending the interior spaces towards the garden. The foundation of mutually shifted monolithic walls and glass forms a composition that either opens up or closes in response to the orientation towards cardinal directions, the need for privacy, and connection with the exterior. House MG de DID | Detached houses https://www.architonic.com/en/project/did-house-mg/20759188 Sun, 10 Mar 2024 00:00:00 +0100
A small inhabited space with an old, somewhat decadent building on the outskirts of the city, in a medium-populated residential area, has been completely transformed to become the new home of a very young couple. The project consisted in the demolition of the previous house and the construction of a new highly energy efficient residential building, characterized by large and bright internal spaces, especially in the living area.

At a design level, the various constraints given by the specific position of the previous building together with the south and west views characterized by proximity to neighborhood, made the process to arrive at the definitive solution very long and difficult.

The clients' request was to live in a contemporary house with a large and very bright living area and a more protected and introspective sleeping one. Therefore the two functions of the home have been identified in two clearly opposite architectures: the living space is open, welcoming an…

The interior design of this house was commissioned by a professional couple, an instrumentalist and an expert in Italian artisanal perfumes. Their working experiences share an instinctive propensity for experimentation that they want to express it at home as well: a space with bold tones that reflects their lifestyle without compromises.

The project takes inspiration from the interiors of a historic Milanese nightclub of the 1970s, where the unconventional use of steel sheets was an innovation for the time. The effect of this material convinced the clients from the beginning, both for its reference to the musical panorama and for its ability to manifest itself with shades of very varied colors and shapes.

In fact, the black iron walls are characterized by deep chromatic shades that refer to artistic interpretations and invite to concentrate on the beauty of darkness.…

The remodelling was supposed to be moderate, respectful, timeless in aesthetics, delicate, and minimalist.

The apartment is located in a late Secession building in Prague, but the original interior was surprisingly not decorative. There is a distinctive interior element, the paneling in the bay windows. As part of the remodelling, it was essential for us to make the original valuable elements stand out and sensitively supplement them with new ones. This was also reflected in the layout solution.

We straightened the double doors to the rooms on one axis to create an enfilade of four rooms. The new layout creates its residents' own private worlds at the corners of the floor plan, and common spaces are the heart of the apartment at its center. The layout modification was only minimal from a construction point of view, but thanks to it the bedroom has its own bathroom niche hidden behind sliding glass. In the vestibule it was simply a matter of moving a part of the wall to create a walk-through wardrobe. Probably the most significant intervention was the connection of the two main rooms, the kitchen and the living room, which are situated facing the street. Upon entering the apartment in the vestibule, there is a built-in wardrobe with oak veneer panelling, which matches the colour and finish of the frames of the original folding doors, which were refurbished. Atelier Esch de Solarlux | Manufacturer references https://www.architonic.com/en/project/solarlux-atelier-esch/20758075 Fri, 23 Feb 2024 00:00:00 +0100 Architectural photography atelier in Blankenberg The German town of Blankenberg is home to a new, modern office building with striking architecture that’s perfectly suited to its location and purpose. The main feature of the design is a two-story, panoramic opening that looks out over the neighbouring valley, inviting the extraordinary landscape into the building and acting as a “viewfinder” for its natural surroundings – a reflection of the photographic art on display inside. The client – an internationally renowned architecture photographer – wanted to create something new that would also fit in perfectly with Blankenberg’s traditional, village-like aesthetic, which is characterised by half-timbered constructions and quarry-stone walls. Just as importantly, the architecture also needed to reflect the photographic art created inside the building. As designers, our goal is to capture the subtle moments of time and recreate them in the spaces we craft. Humanscapes come to life when memories and lessons learned are molded into dwellings—spaces that resonate with and respect the natural environment around us. The concept of 'Humanscape' took root four years ago when we carved a basement into the natural slope of a residential site. With no preconceived plans, hands worked intuitively to lay the shuttering. Light wells and access points emerged in response to this raw process, with two walls shared with underground water tanks and the other two supporting soil up to half their height. This underground haven, designed with punctures for wind and light, became a cherished space for midday rests, lunch hours, and site meetings due to its exceptional thermal comfort. Observing weather changes, the passing of the day, and raindrops became part of…

Often considered to be the archetype of the film noir genre. John Huston’s movie is a trendsetter of the cinematic genre that emerged in the 1940s. Here, mysteries, schemes, and shadowy narratives are set in a moody urban decor at night. In a gritty world of shadows, the protagonists evolve with darkness wrapped all around them and the moon as a spotlight.

Shot entirely in Warner Bros' backlot, the film's cinematography, marked by its chiaroscuro low-key lighting, labyrinth of dimly lit streets, and shadowy back alleys epitomizes the visual style and the cynical nature of the characters.

The new decor of the post-production film studio based in Geneva relies on similar strategies to create a unique atmosphere. Traditionally, furniture and interior photography often shows a completely furnished ambiance, brought to life with numerous accessories and details. However, the question remains: What really captures the attention - the ambiance or the individual piece of furniture? At Danthree Studio, we have found that it is difficult to focus on a single product when it is presented in a natural, detail-rich space. Our Approach: Minimalism in 3D Product Visualization At Danthree Studio, we use the principles of minimalism to create our 3D furniture, home & living renderings. One of these districts, one of these dots is currently the focus of attention: Leeste. Its town centre has been declared a redevelopment area, and around 10 million euros of public funds are being invested here as part of the urban development funding. A central area of the redevelopment project is Leeste's new parlour: the Henry-Wetjen-Platz. The Henry-Wetjen-Platz is to be completely rebuilt as a village square where a community centre and garages used to stand. To this end, the municipality of Weyhe had carried out a landscape planning appraisal procedure in the summer of 2016, from which the firm of Kilian + Frenz Landschaftsarchitekten (Bremen) emerged as the first prize winner. However, the high-quality design cannot be implemented in the short term, as the edges of the square are to be built on first. Warm Retreat de Forma Arquitectura | https://www.architonic.com/en/project/forma-arquitectura-warm-retreat/20756101 Thu, 08 Feb 2024 00:00:00 +0100
In the heart of Barcelona's Eixample district, we have undertaken a comprehensive renovation of an apartment built in 1900. Starting with its original layout, characterized by dark and narrow compartments, our goal was to transform this space into a versatile and comfortable environment that meets the contemporary living demands while preserving the modernist essence.

Due to the change in the way we live and work, the Provença project has been designed as a warm retreat for the long hours we spend at home. The spaces must have personality without becoming burdensome over extended periods. The final aesthetic translates into a warm minimalism, with simple yet evocative design lines, emphasizing earthy tones and wood.

The primary challenge of the project, before tackling the space's design, was to preserve the apartment's original architectural elements while enhancing energy efficiency and comfort. This can sometimes seem counterproductive due to the insulation limitati…

Although the original layout of the spaces was respected, the Belgian interior architecture studio worked on customized functionality to suit the lives of the new residents. The villa comprises three floors with a number of remarkable features, such as a state-of-the-art dressing room and a substantial wine room, as well as a cinema room, gym and sauna. Outside, the team additionally installed a pool house. Besides the dialogue between the closed architecture and the open and light-filled interior, Grain Designoffice also focused on contrast in the villa's furnishings. Thanks to the rebellious yet delicate mix of colours, textures, materials and design, the interior was given a certain “je ne sais quoi”. Among other things, you can find Pietra di Medici natural stone combined with American wa…

The apartment is dominated by the main living space, a salon with a carved wooden Renaissance ceiling. The room was divided by a partition at some point in the past. This dividing wall was demolished to free the original space in its entirety. The original wall paint was uncovered and it revealed a deep crimson colour. The determining factor here is the darkness of the surfaces. The wood beam ceiling and the walls feature dark, saturated tones. A dark space embraces people, and it creates an atmosphere of closeness when compared with a light one.

From the start, we were intrigued by the investors' approach and enchanted by the atmosphere of the house. In each one of them, a family of furniture-that-turns-into-spaces configures domesticities halfway between these two scales. The furniture grows, becomes XXL, and is thought architecturally. It values the handmade and custom-made material, crafted in small companies, and in its final execution on site, different construction trades from both areas will enter into dialogue. The second project in the series rehabilitates an open block house from the 1950s in the Retiro neighborhood of Madrid, facing a leafy garden. The original house, which had a terrace, had been partially renovated, eliminating this outdoor space and compartmentalizing the common areas of the house into numerous rooms organized by uses - entrance hall, living room, dining room, office, kitchen, pantry, hallway. The project proposes to unify them, recovering the curved wall of the s…

The outcome of the division distorted the original flat, which enjoyed its access at its center. Now, the access is located at the interior end of the apartment, driving the natural flow towards the exit to a spacious interior gallery room overlooking the big interior courtyard. The existing flooring, consisting of a rich variety of ‘nolla’ mosaics with drawings and colors of great value, was preserved.

In a span of just over 6 meters, it was decided to place two bedrooms on the inner part of the apartment, enjoying light and ventilation from two interior courtyards, allowing the living room, kitchen, and dining spaces to enjoy a more generous connection to the backyard. Lovers of Mexican culture, natural materials, vegetation, warmth, and the characteristic craftsmanship of the towns in the state of Michoacán; they wanted a house that had some of these elements in its essence and materiality. Open gardens to place a vegetable garden, vegetation inside, the warmth provided by natural materials, light and shadow that would bring mysticism to the everyday life of living in their own home. In addition, they required a space like a study-library to hold their documentary and work collection. A house where the "luxury" is the space itself, the light and the shadow; the natural vegetation of the site and the surrounding context, Eréndira House does not seek to stand out within the site, nor to disturb, it aims to be a part of, to blend in with it. Natural materials and gardens with natural vegetation are the premise that gives life to this project. Something essential…
