In 1954, when Le Corbusier was attempting to regain control of the licensing of his iconic chaise longue from Embru and Thonet, the Swiss department store Wohnbedarf commissioned a small series of the chaise. Correspondence with Wohbedarf indicates that Le Corbusier suggested a small design modification of the Embru model: that the width of the base upon which the chaise rests be increased from 52 to 54 centimeters. The present lot's dimensions match this modification, and the piece's provenance can be traced as far back as the mid-1950s.
Chromed tubular steel and leather upholstery on a black-painted steel and rubber base 621/2 in. (158.8 cm) long back of the base: 54 cm width
