Pre-production Aluminum Group lounge chair
Aluminum, plastic coated aluminum, fabric upholstery
25"w x 25"d x 35"h
Eames designed the Aluminum Group seating tin response to what he saw as a lack of high-quality outdoor furniture. The Eames Office worked on the chair design for three years using full sized mock-ups in wood and metal called the "Leisure Line" or "Indoor Outdoor Group." This example has Girard fabric upholstery and the cloth is tripled up in several areas with folds, consistent with the earliest models. The finish coating on the frame and round inserts on the corners also differ from later examples. The Eames Office developed the very first chairs with Saran, a plastic mesh fabric designed by Girard. This chair has cloth fabric applied in the same manor as the first examples ever produced. By the time the full production started they used a Naugahyde ribbed fabric.
