Profile
dekleva gregoric architects started their research in the topics of participation and mass-customization of collective housing at the AA in London and are co-authors of the book Negotiate my boundary!, published by AA Publications and Birkhauser. The book received intense professional attention related to several topics, including social models of sharing and co-habitation.
Recently they initiated and led the design research on nanotourism, a participatory, locally oriented alternative to the current downsides of conventional tourism. With their research team they received the exhibition’s highest honour, Best Collaboration Award at the BIO50 - Biennial of Design in Ljubljana.
dekleva gregoric architects’ research and projects have received many international and national awards; among others, several nominations for Mies van der Rohe Award, including Metal recycling plant and Cultural Centre of EU Space Technologies (KSEVT), collective work of four Slovenian architectural studios. In 2013 the practice was selected as Highly Commended at 21 for 21 WAN AWARDS 2012 - searching for “the 21 architects for the 21st century. The initiative aims to highlight outstanding, forward-thinking people and organisations who have the demonstrable potential to be the next big thing in the architectural world.”
Several of their projects explore the topic of habitat, including their first project 43 m2 XXS house built in 2004 in Ljubljana, awarded and extensively presented internationally. In 2012 their project Clifftop house on Maui, USA received AIT Award and International Architecture Awards 2012.
In 2015 they explored the potentials of redefining the regional tradition and compressed family life in Compact Karst House, which won WAN House of the Year 2015 Award, Best architects 16 Award and it was commended in prestigious AR House Award 2015, by Architectural Review, UK.

Philosophy
dekleva gregoric architects is an architectural practice pursuing the concept of ‘research by design’ and ‘design by research’ through diverse projects, different scales and programs as well as diverse climates and localities. They operate internationally.
The position of architecture as a process of thinking is utilized though the “re* principle”. They understand re* as re-search, re-define, re-think, re-act, re-cycle, re-use re-fer, re-alize, re-flect on diverse levels: social, spatial, material, historical or climatic. Each project is a response to intense research of specific constrains and conditions that become the ultimate generative tools aiming to challenge the obvious. They utilise a systematic design approach to establish intense structuring of space and challenging the use of materials with exposing their primary natures.
The user’s experience of architecture and participation continues as practice’s central objective. The topics of new collectivity, sharing, participation and collaboration frame the social position of architecture that aims to stimulate new interaction with the users or between the users and encourage users’ participation in the design process and customization to users’ needs.
