The innovative Swiss watch manufacturer Ventura has extended its collection of automatic digital watches with a new model – the SPARC Sigma MGS. Designed by Paolo Fancelli, it is characterised by its organic form and its carefully considered radii, which flow harmoniously into each other

The Swiss manufacturer Ventura is the leading brand internationally for high-end, automatic digital watches. The 2013 edition of BaselWorld saw Ventura launch its new SPARC Sigma MGS onto the market. Designed by Paolo Fancelli, the timepiece is fitted with the MGS Micro Generator System and the VEN_10 digital module. These two technical components make for a pared-down symbiosis, resulting in a modern watch design.

With its organic, contoured form, the new SPARC Sigma MGS is a real alternative, particularly for people with narrow wrists. The automatic digital watch is available in different versions, with strap made of either Durinox® Durinox® (hardened stainless steel) or rubber.

The limited RED edition – of which there are 50 pieces – comes with a MGS flywheel and rubber strap in the same red as Ventura’s ‘V’ logo. Shown here, the W 77 Ltd RED model in black Durinox®

Limited RED Edition
To mark the launch of the SPARC Sigma MGS, Ventura is offering a limited RED edition. The watches in this exclusive series, limited to just 50 pieces, are all individually numbered. The MGS flywheel uses Pantone 032C as its colour – the same red as Ventura’s ‘V’ logo. The same colour is used for the watch’s limited-edition rubber strap. A Durinox strap is included, along with a tool to swap them over.

A small Swiss manufacture bets on innovation
In 2000, Ventura introduced the first automatic, generator-operated digital timepiece. Unlike analogue watches with similar features, digital devices require a much more powerful energy source, due to the liquid crystal display and the multiple functions. In Ventura's own MGS (Micro-Generator-System), the energy of an oscillating mass is first amplified by a mechanical gear and a spring, before being released to high-capacity generator. This innovative concept of combining mechanical and solid-state systems is visualized by placing the MGS® sidewise next to the time module and was first realized with SPARC® MGS® introduced a year ago. This radically novel timepiece received numerous international design prizes such as the coveted Red Dot “best of the best” award 2012 and the GOOD DESIGN Award (Japan).

Designer Paolo Fancelli was given the difficult task to formulate the same technical concept with an architectural counterpoint. He chose to create an organic form with flowing curves, the varying heights of the mechanisms and their asynchronous array requiring smoothly integrating radii to achieve a harmonic and proportional unity. To consolidate the resulting complexity of the shape with the means of serial production proved to be a real challenge. Immediately recognizable as a product of the brand and in spite of sharing with its sister-model distinctly characteristic technical attributes, Fancelli's timepiece has a self-assured architectural identity and integrity; it fulfills the manufacturer's intention to further extend the interest for its technical innovation.

High functionality
The SPARC Sigma MGS incorporates the EasySkroll® operating system, which allows the viewing and setting of all functions intuitively by means of a single scrolling barrel, very much like with a computer mouse; while a manual is supplied, it is largely dispensable. The powerful microprocessor is flash-programmable and permits individual updating of the newest version (currently v1.08). An intricate energy-management along with a motion detector automatically switches off the LC display whenever the watch is not in use, thus saving energy. Ventura watches are known for their highly functional properties and for their extended longevity achieved with cases and bracelets made of scratch-resistant Durinox® (hardened stainless steel) and the implementation of sapphire crystals.

Products of high value
Ventura develops its own software and builds all its movements and modules in house; only selected, high-quality components are used and the assembly is carried out by specially trained craftsmen, each being responsible for an entire timepiece. For this reason, this independent Swiss watch brand rightfully and confidently call itself a “Manufacture Electronique”.
