Refurbishing the Alice Tully Hall (built 1969) in the Licoln Center, New York, presented a unique challenge for the U.S. company 3form.

To create a heat formable translucent wood with acoustic properties for a innovative installation combining classic solid wood surfacing with contemporary translucent wood veneers.

Walnut Ecoresin™ Paneel | 3form

After 3 months of research and development 3form produced a material with the needed properties for this complex installation. The panels were then tested for fabrication and bending capabilities- and production began.

Contractor: Turner Construction

The inside walls are sheathed in an amber-colored veneer about the thickness of two sheets of paper, cut from a single log of an African moabi tree.

3form Architecture was involved in the entire process from geometry rationalization for the heat forming to the structural, hardware and lighting design for installing the compound curves.

To improve the sound, the acousticians, JaffeHolden, lined up flangelike panels along the front of the side walls to bounce sound inward.

After extensive material testing, fabrication testing and prototyping- the installation is set to be completed this fall and will be the first world-class performance hall to be clad with recycled resin.

3form : Custom Fabrication, Architectural Support and Material Development

This highly collaborative project laid the groundwork for the new 3form wood collection. The innovative material becomes the highlight of the innovative design. When installed, the performance hall will glow with the warmth of wood enhanced by the luminosity of quality recycled resin.
