DURABLE XXL TABLE BY RODERICK VOS
The name The Sicilian almost automatically evokes pictures of a large Italian family enjoying dinner together. There would be abundant space for everyone at the huge new table designed by Roderick Vos; The Sicilian is available in sizes up to 380 cm! The indestructible steel base carries a high gloss top made of durable Kirei Board: a lightweight but ultra strong and ecological material.
Kirei Board originated from the idea of a farmer in Asia to change the habit of burning the tough waste – long wood like stalks – of the Sorghum soya plant. For a long time this has been responsible for substantial CO2 emission. There was found a method to transform the organic fiber with just a small amount of energy and non-poisonous formaldehyde kit into the decorative Kirei board. This is done in a factory in the Sorghum growing area, thus contributing to local employment and economy.
Without four legs
Designing his table Vos decided for an unconventional two-leg construction. As a result no one has to have the known difficulties with legs at the table corners. The solid base combined with the Kirei top, finished with a hard polymere coating, guarantees dining pleasure for generations. The Sicilian is available in the following XXL sizes: 280, 320 en 380 cm.
Vos about The Sicilian
“Due to the open structure the table has become a visually rewarding design from all angles. The table top gets an floating appearance, almost like an airplane wing. For the metal base I used an ’old style’ metal H beam for structural strength. For me, the use of this material embodies the machine made character from the 30’s. A period I love because of the simple and honest approach into ‘design matters’; a vision I share.”
