De Padova was founded in 1956, the year in which Maddalena and Fernando De Padova opened a small store on Via Montenapoleone in Milan and decided to import Scandinavian furniture. In the decades to follow the company grew, producing—under license, at first— the finest American collection of furnishings for the home and office, under the trademark Herman Miller, designed by C. Eames, G. Nelson and A. Girard. De Padova then began to produce its own collection, thanks to collaboration with great internationally acclaimed designers.
In 1965 the large showroom at Corso Venezia 14 was opened, for the display and sale of the collections of furniture and complements for the home and office produced by I.C.F. De Padova. In 1983 came the launch of “Edizioni De Padova”, expanding the collection with imported furniture and objects, with exclusive distribution in Italy. An approach that was totally innovative for the furniture market at the time. The company also began to produce its own items under the “Edizioni De Padova” brand, working with design greats like Achille Castiglioni, Dieter Rams and, above all, Vico Magistretti, who created most of the new collection, joined by the home/office furniture series that completely overturned the concept of the tradition office, meeting new needs and tastes in a way that became ever more explicit over the years.
The De Padova Collection continued to grow, and new designers like Marco Zanuso Jr., Denis Santachiara, Thomas Sandell, Studio Cerri & Associati, Patricia Urquiola, Xavier Lust, Mirto Zocca, Petra Runge joined the team, alongside the first historic names.
In 2004 Maddalena De Padova received the prestigious Compasso d’Oro Career Award, in the award’s 20th edition. The jury wrote: “The great commitment of Maddalena De Padova to the production and spread of design, as a shared culture and point of exchange in different i nternational contexts, represents a unique case of consistency and quality in our country. From the mid-1950s to the present, her research has been a fine example of a successful synthesis between design (of the company and the product), production and distribution. Her profound knowledge of Scandinavian, American and Italian design, thanks to collaboration with some of the leading personalities on the world design scene like Arne Jacobsen, Charles Eames, George Nelson, Dieter Rams, Achille Castiglioni and Vico Magistretti, to name just a few, together with her tireless will, have made De Padova a worldwide reference point for Italian design”.
In 2006 De Padova celebrated its 50th anniversary with a book and an installation that retraced its history through encounters, interviews, stories and images. The celebration held during the 45th Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan then became a traveling exhibition, reaching different cities in Italy and Europe, hosted by the retail network.
The next year, De Padova organized an international design competition, in collaboration with Designboom.com, to commemorate Vico Magistretti, the world-renowned Italian architect and designer.
De Padova, in January 2008, also acquired the brand Zoltan, created in the early 1990s thanks to the entrepreneurial spirit and intuition of Luca De Padova. From the outset this firm made products that combine perfectly with the offerings of De Padova. This operation made it possible to expand the collection, with a particular focus on the contract sector.
In recent years new collaborations have strengthened De Padova’s product development research, thanks to internationally acclaimed and emerging designers like Paolo Pallucco, d’Urbino-Lomazzi, Nendo, Damian Williamson, Lorenz*Kaz, Naoto Fukasawa, Jasper Morrison, Monica Förster, Vincent Van Duysen, Philippe Nigro, Luca Nichetto and Aksu/Suardi.
On 1 August 2013 Luca De Padova became the Sole Administrator of the De Padova company. Previously its CEO, he worked alongside his sister Valeria, who decided to retire. Consolidating complete ownership, he confirms his commitment to guarantee continuity, keeping the ideas and passion that have always characterized this family business alive.
Luca De Padova explains: “My position represents a passage from one generation to the next, a situation of continuity, but with a particular focus on the changes of a world that is constantly evolving. My main concern will be to make the company increasingly dynamic and competitive, striving for excellence with greater harmony and motivation in all the parts of the firm.”
Together with his staff, he is moving forward with a corporate reorganization plan that calls for growth in all the operative activities of the production area and investments to support the brand and its visibility around the world.
Ilaria Messa, project manager of the Contract Division, continues to coordinate all the activities related to this sector and now provides direct support to Luca De Padova in the initial phase of new product selection, from the briefing of designers to the choice of materials and fabrics, and in the choice of the ideal partners and suppliers for the development of custom offerings. Together with a work team, she also supervises the design of exhibition layouts for the showroom and its windows on Corso Venezia, as well as the display installations for dealers in Italy and abroad, and for the trade fairs in which De Padova takes part.
Francesca Bassi, store manager of the showroom on Corso Venezia in Milan, where she coordinates the staff of professionals on a day-to-day basis to offer personalized design services for all clients, also assists the Contract Division in the identification and development of possible opportunities in major projects, while distributing information to studios of architecture and design.
In 2011, the De Padova team was been joined by Marco Velardi—Creative Director—who focuses on the company’s stylistic and creative choices, supporting corporate communications, press office and public relations activities with designers and possible partners.
The introduction of new managerial figures is part of the logic to achieve objectives that are enabling the company to lay the solid industrial groundwork for future growth.
In over 50 years of activity De Padova has kept faith with its original philosophy: design as a tool to spread emotion. The De Padova collection comes from the inspiration of the great design classics, from the love of fine craftsmanship and objects of memory and from research combined with innovation. This is what makes the De Padova style so unique.
