Alfonso Architects
Alberto Alfonso, MArch / Principal

He is a founding principal and President of Alfonso Architects, an award winning 35 member architecture firm located in Ybor City, Florida.  Cuban born, Mr. Alfonso was educated at The University of Florida where he received his M.A. in 1983. With his brother Carlos and partner Angel del Monte, Alfonso Architects, Inc. was founded in 1988.

Mr. Alfonso’s love of architecture developed at an early age as he was raised in the house of an Architect: his father Carlos E. Alfonso, Sr. Carlos Alfonso, Sr. began his career in Havana, Cuba and fled the country with his family in 1960 to begin a successful practice in Tampa, Florida.

Mr. Alfonso recently received the prestigious American Institute of Architects State of Florida 2008 Design Honor Award.  This award is given an individual architect, who has, by the high quality and originality of one’s design and body of work over a period of 10 or more years, advanced the cause and public value of good architecture in the state of Florida, and, by one’s leadership, has provided an inspiration to colleagues. Mr. Alfonso received the 1987 Eduardo Garcia Award from the Florida Central Chapter of The American Institute of Architects. This award is given to the top Architectural Designer in the six county Central Florida area and is based on a submitted body of work.

Recent projects recognized by the State of Florida AIA Design Awards program include Tampa International Airport Airside C, Nielsen Media Research Global Technology Center (a 650,000 s.f. corporate campus headquarters), University of South Florida Center for Advanced Healthcare Frank and Carol Morsani Center, the University of South Florida Medical Office Building, the Mission of St. Mary Chapel, the University of South Florida School of Psychology building, and the Hillsborough County Downtown Partnership Urban K-8 school.

Mr. Alfonso is also an accomplished painter and was a featured artist at The Tuscan Sun Festival 2010 in Cortona, Italy. His paintings can be found in the Nielsen Media Global Technology Center, the Mission of St. Mary Chapel and Carmel Café. In December 2010 Mr. Alfonso’s paintings were featured at The Morean Arts Center, St. Petersburg, FL in a collaborative exhibition titled “Painting the Poem, Poeming the Painting.”

Alfonso Architects, Inc. is a 30 person architectural design firm with current offices in Tampa Florida, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Milan, Italy. The firm was founded in 1988 by Cuban born brothers Carlos and Alberto Alfonso and longtime friend Angel del Monte. The office is an extension of the work of the late Carlos Alfonso, Sr., father of Carlos and Alberto.

Alberto Alfonso leads the design effort of the office working with partners Carlos Alfonso and Angel del Monte. Alfonso Architects has won over 40 project-specific AIA Design Awards. For example, in 2007 Alfonso Architects was presented the Tampa Bay Firm of the Year award, in 2003 the firm received the AIA Florida State Firm of the Year Award, and in 2008 Alberto Alfonso was awarded the prestigious American Institute of Architects State of Florida 2008 Design Honor.

Representative design projects include The Nielsen Media Research Global Technology Center, a 650,000 square foot office and technology campus in Oldsmar, Florida. The Tampa International Airports Southwest Airlines Terminal, a 110,000 square foot airside. Both of these projects received the AIA Award of Honor.

Philosophically Alberto Alfonso’s design process relies in the development of a projectspecific architectural design idea that is grounded in site, program history, and region. An accomplished painter, Alfonso’s process also utilizes painting, sketching, physical wood and steel models and 3D generated computer technology to investigate design solutions.

The work is heavily influenced by climate and the celebration of light referencing their Cuban heritage. There is a strong emphasis on materiality investigation to achieve an architectural expression that is both timeless and vigorous in detailing.
