Pure Möbelbezugstoff von Kvadrat

Pure is an organic cotton upholstery coloured by Swedish textile designer Åsa Pärson. Åsa Pärson has previously designed upholstery and curtain fabrics for Kvadrat and as with her other textiles, Pure is characterised by subdued, sophisticated and highly applicable colours. Åsa Pärson’s approach to textiles is to retain only the essentials. She is fond of defined boundaries and stringent, timeless styles and wants her designs to reflect care, contemplation and poetry. Asked to create a colour range for an organic cotton textile, coloured with the minimum impact on the environment, Åsa Pärson thought immediately of organic dying – a colour technique she studied in Laos and Japan. She also referenced, from her Stockholm studio, yarn samples coloured with Swedish flora, e.g. birch, tansy, madder and lichen. Inspired by this natural colouring technique, Åsa Pärson has created a colour range that harmonises the simplicity of the weave and the regularity of the fabric surface. The colours range from delicate to darker hues of natural white, grey, blue, yellow along with soft brown, green and red.

“The result reflects my intention of creating a gentle, beautiful scale clearly anchored in nature. Although subdued, the colours have fine lustre because the yarn was mercerised before the weaving”, the designer mused on the process. Pure meets the EU Flower requirements, meaning that water and environment-harming substances have been limited to a minimum. The raw material used to make Pure is 100% organic. Both organic and conventionally grown cotton is recyclable and biologically degradable, but in contrast to conventionally grown cotton, organic cotton has been grown with no fertiliser or pesticides. Organic cotton is completely natural. The seeds are spread by natural reproduction to keep the original species. Organic cotton is grown by crop rotation to avoid soil exhaustion. Organic compost is used as fertiliser and helps retain soil moisture. Organic cotton is grown in selected areas with adequate natural rainfall to reduce the need for irrigation. Both growing and production of organic cotton are based on long-term, sustainable methods benefitting the environment and people.
