Cosy armchair with a high rounded back plus a matching pouf, designed by Antoni de Moragas Gallissà in 1957 and re-edited 35 years later along with the Moragas lamp, in what was the beginning of the Santa & Cole Design Classics series.

Inspired by the enveloping lines of a Roman metal bathtub but considerably more comfortable, the Moragas chair is an open invitation to sit back and relax. It invites you to dive into its comfortably springy curved lines. Similar in form to other designs of the period, it nevertheless stands apart because it so perfectly epitomises its designer’s faith in man’s ability to imagine and dream. The Moragas armchair is a classic piece which heightens the value of your home, a versatile, good-humoured object which is in utter consonance with all the canons of modern design.

The Moragas armchair has a high curved back like a wing chair, but without being one. It shelters and hides one in its generous arms and high back. Its curved forms require a special style of period upholstering: buttoning, which fastens the fabric to the back by means of covered buttons, while the seat is covered with a perfectly round cushion. It has abrupt, short arms, a rounded base and four cylindrical wooden legs. The backless pouf is a matching companion piece.

The Moragas armchair won first prize in a 1954 FAD contest whose objective was to “Dignify the Middle-Class Home”. Moragas’s award-winning system consisted of “49 standarised pieces which the future users of the furniture will be able to combine according to their tastes and income, with each piece of furniture designed like a simple Meccano set”. This philosophy was to inspire Moragas’s furniture designs from then on, and explains why two Moragas armchairs placed next to one another create an atmosphere of pleasant companionship.

The work of a pioneer in 50s Spain, a time of little demand for design objects in a country that was just beginning to emerge from the austerity of the post-war years, the Moragas armchair and pouf live up to their creator’s aim: “To do whatever I do as well as I can, imbuing even the most everyday objects with my sense of design.”
