So PoMo! – 'Postmodernism: Style and Subversion 1970–1990' at London's V&A Museum
It's forty years since the love-it-or-hate-it, style-driven phenomenon that was postmodernism first emerged in architectural practice, soon manifesting itself in design, art, fashion and music. The V&A's major new show, 'Postmodernism: Style and Subversion 1970–1990', examines its vibrant, playful forms and, sometimes contradictory, meaning.

How Many Designers Does It Take to Change a Light Bulb?: Samuel Wilkinson
When young British designer Samuel Wilkinson set out to redesign the standard low-energy light bulb, with the aim of making it work just as hard aesthetically as it does environmentally, he was in for a long trek. Journeying beyond the safe and familiar territory of the archetype is seldom easy, particularly when you have to develop a new set of manufacturing methods to realise your product. In conversation with Architonic, Wilkinson sheds some light on his award-winning 'Plumen 001' bulb.

Keeping It Real: Claus Mølgaard
Behind every great design there's a great designer. But, more often than not, there are a number players involved. Meet Claus Mølgaard, the go-to Danish design engineer whose work on products for the likes of Ron Arad and the Bouroullec Brothers reminds us that design is an iterative, and often complex, process, as much as a finished product.

Light Headed: Euroluce 2011
Excuse me. Have you got a light? No? Well, maybe you should have visited this year's edition of Euroluce, the international lighting fair that rides pillion with the Milan Salone Internazionale del Mobile. But not to worry. Architonic has made a selection of some of the show's luminaries for you, so sit back and light up.

People Will Talk: Dornbracht Conversations 3
Put a group of designers, curators and design writers in a room and what do you get? The Dornbracht Conversations. The third annual platform for intelligent dialogue on the state of design, past, present and future, hosted by German design manufacturer Dornbracht, took place last month, with a hundred or so invited design journalists and PRs in attendance. Here's our report on some of what was discussed, plus an invitation to you to have your say.

Furnishing the Future: Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret's Chandigarh furniture
Having received the brief to plan and design a new state capital for the Punjab, Le Corbusier, true to form, delivered a striking urban entity that's a veritable 'Gesamtkunstwerk'. A forthcoming exhibition at the Galerie Anton Meier in Geneva of the Swiss architect and Pierre Jeanneret's furniture for India's first postcolonial city demonstrates neatly the level of consideration given to the shaping this modernist gem.

When We Were Modern: Kenneth Grange at the Design Museum
A retrospective of the work of industrial-design master Kenneth Grange at London's Design Museum celebrates the prolific designer's contribution to shaping British material culture, while encouraging us to think about the purpose and responsibilities of product design today.

The In-Betweener: matali crasset
She may elect to spell her name all lower case, but matali crasset's work is big on concept and ambition. Yet, the Paris-based designer, who's collaborated with the likes of Established & Sons and Pallucco, insists she's not that interested in products in themselves. Une contradiction? Pas du tout. Architonic invites you to read on to find out why.

The Milan Four: Jean Nouvel
In the first of four interviews from the 2011 Milan Salone Internazionale del Mobile with four very different figures from the creative world – an internationally celebrated architect, a grand master of Italian design, a strongly concept-led designer and a leading manufacturer – Architonic meets Jean Nouvel, Pritzker-Prize-winning architect of such projects as the Torre Agbar in Barcelona and Paris's Fondation Cartier, as well as designer of a growing body of highly considered furniture and lighting pieces.

Death by Architecture
Shuffling off this mortal coil is something we all, sadly, have to do. There's no opting out. But while mortality might be a great leveller, a number of architects have shown recently how designing environments that process death – be it in practical or psychological terms – can be elevated above the uninspired builds that we've been used to, which have all to easily embraced historicism or, perhaps worse, anonymity. Architonic presents a selection of projects that put some life back into designing for the dead.

Kindergarten Design Grows Up: contemporary nursery-school projects
A number of recently completed kindergarten projects have proved that designing user-centred environments for the more diminutive among us shouldn't be at odds with creating highly expressive structures. Architonic takes a look at a selection of nursery schools with a grown-up ambition.

Kortrijk Remembered: in conversation with Interieur co-founder Pol Descamps
Punching above its weight, the respected Belgian design biennale Interieur, held in the small town of Kortrijk since 1968, has always thought big. What it lacks in scale, it makes up for in discernment and ambition. 'We saw how international and influential Milan was and we wanted to be on that level,' explains one of its founders, Pol Descamps, while talking to Architonic about the fair's origins and significance...

Switched On: Benjamin Hubert
'Awards come and go,' says Benjamin Hubert. 'They're not a mark of good design, that's for sure.' You'd be forgiven for thinking that there's more than a touch of false modesty or disingenuity at work here, given the celebratory press coverage the young British designer received a couple of years ago, not to mention the numerous plaudits. But not so. In a recent interview with Architonic, Hubert reveals himself to be as pragmatic and self-aware as he is creative.

The Milan Four: Alessandro Mendini
In the second of our series of four interviews with four leading design figures from this year's Milan Furniture Fair, Architonic meets Alessandro Mendini – designer, architect, writer, theorist and all-round provocateur. Mendini, who turns 80 this year, discusses, among other things, the importance of irony, the increasing lack of polemic in design, and why certain detractors of the 1980s postmodern Memphis movement might be talking 'bullshit'.

Yorgo Lykouria: Industrial Poet
It's somewhat fitting, given the almost lyric quality of his name, that Canadian-born designer Yorgo Lykouria should be interested in reintroducing the poetic into everyday life. His latest product for premium bathroom brand Alape is a wash basin that eschews preconceived ideas of what such an object type should look like in favour of designing the actual experience of washing, one characterised by quietude and wonder. Meeting up with Lykouria at the recent ISH fair in Frankfurt, Architonic got its hands dirty with some serious design discussion.

Love in a Cold Climate: Architonic meets Artek chief Mirkku Kullberg
Few design brands evoke as much warmth on the part of consumers as the heritage-steeped Finnish company Artek, currently celebrating 75 years in business. Co-founded in 1935 by the hero of Scandinavian modernism Alvar Aalto, Artek has certainly earned its design stripes. Here, its managing director, Mirkku Kullberg, in conversation with Architonic during the recent Cologne Furniture Fair, discusses how the manufacturer's longevity is matched by its long-sighted, forward-facing vision.
