David Atkinson Lighting Design (DALD) realised a scheme for a large private landscape project In Essex, UK.

The brief from the client was for lighting not only to enhance the new landscape design which is densely planted with shrubs, grasses and seasonal flowers but to offer energy efficiency and sustainability.

Atkinson wanted to create a naturalistic approach to the lighting by limiting the amount of point sources to the garden, with the majority of fittings being positioned discreetly at low Level. For the general planting accent lighting to is from compact stainless steel 7w LED spike fittings. By using cool 4000kelvin LED the different variations of planting and colour are defined.

For general lighting to the main terrace area 35w Metal Halide Box Up/Down lights are positioned onto the black weather boarding barn, this helps to limit and control the amount of reflected light out to the space.

There are two water features within the garden terrace area one being a stainless steel dish which is lit external by a custom designed 2w LED head mounted onto a 600mm rod. The second water feature is a long trough with pumped water one end – after various trials it was decided to mount an IP68 rated 7w LED below the water outlet, which helps to reflect the water back off the surrounding brick wall & grasses.

To the rear of the garden the existing large mature trees (which include poplar & walnut) are up lit by narrow beam 35w HID spot fixtures, fitted with elliptical spreader lenses. Smaller trees and shrubs are back lit by 70w symmetric floods, which help to accentuate their form with and without foliage.

By utilising LED and Metal Halide light sources the lighting design has adhered to the client’s brief of making the scheme energy efficient, as well creating subtle visual impact to the garden throughout the seasons.

The scheme is controlled by a wireless remote system which allows the client flexibility and an element of future proofing when required.
