Michel De Klerk was the Amsterdam School's foremost architect and designer, whose style eschewed the prevailing functionalist tendencies and instead drew upon more exotic, Moorish or Oriental influences for his luxurious interior schemes. Frequently utilising exotic timbers such as mahogany, coromandel and ebony, together with velvets and braided decorative details, De Klerk's handling of form and texture was primarily expressionistic. A selection of his furnishings were posthumously exhibited at the 1925 Exposition des Arts Décoratifs.
