Around the middle of the 1950s, coinciding with one of the most brilliant and exalted moments in new Italian design, an award was born with the intention of showing recognition to the finest creators and projects, which would eventually be regarded as the most prestigious design prize in the world: the Compasso d´Oro.
Right in the middle of national reconstruction in the wake of the devastation of the Second World War, no country more than Italy understood the importance of Industrial Design as a motivating and differentiating production,It achieved its objective to the extent that, from then on and until the present day, the concept of Design would be almost inevitably associated with the identity and idiosyncrasy of the transalpine country.
While initially the Compasso d´Oro prizes focused their attention on other kinds of objects, the introduction of technology to furniture manufacturing incorporated these elements of such common, everyday use into the roll call of the prestigious awards. And it was in 1962 that the table whose name corresponded to its same year of creation, designed by Mario Bellini, became the first piece of furniture to belong to the distinguished by such a important award.
Forty-two years later, Andreu World, together with Mario Bellini, have tried to maintain intact the spirit of the original “1962” in presenting the table “CARTESIUS”, which is made entirely from plywood covered in natural oak and wengue, retaining all the allure and lightness of the original design while incorporating a newer, more contemporary aura.
