Frank O. Gehry entwarf von 1989 an im Auftrag von Knoll International eine Stuhl-Kollektion aus Ahorn-Bändern. Vor ihm hatten bereits Thonet, Alvar Aalto, Marcel Breuer und Charles Eames mit gebogenem Holz gearbeitet. Doch keiner hatte bis dahin den Versuch, Holz zu flechten, realisiert.
Inspiriert von Obstkisten, mit denen Gehry als Kind gespielt hatte, experimentierte er zweieinhalb Jahre lang in einer eigens für Knoll International errichteten Werkstatt. Über 120 Prototypen gingen den Endprodukten voraus, deren Bezeichnung wie „Cross Check, Power Play“ etc. auf die Leidenschaft Gehrys für Eishockey anspielen.
„Möbel aus gebogenem Holz waren eine Idee, die mir immer schon im Kopf herumging – es erschien mir so selbstverständlich wie Korbflechten.“ Seine Stühle und Tische sind erstaunlich, denn es gibt keinen Rahmen, um dem das Holz gewickelt oder genagelt wird. Die langen Holzbänder sind so miteinander verbunden, dass sie sich selbst versteifen.
Für die Herstellung der Gehry-Kollektion verwendet Knoll International aus Gründen des Umweltschutzes nur Ahornholz aus den Wäldern der Menominee-Indianer. Dort werden kontrollierte Forstmethoden angewandt, die einen langfristigen Baumbestand sichern: Jeder gefällte Baum wird durch einen neuen Sprössling ersetzt.
Bereits bei Markteinführung 1992 waren die Ahornmöbel von Frank Gehry im Museum of Modern Art in New York ausgestellt.
