LITERATURE:
GEBRÜDER THONET, THONET BENTWOOD & OTHER FURNITURE. THE 1904 ILLUSTRATED CATALOGUE, VIENNA (REPUBL.
NEW YORK, 1980),
DEREK E. OSTERGARD, ED., BENT WOOD AND METAL FURNITURE: 1850-1946, NEW YORK, 1987, CAT. NO. 36 OF THE FOUR FOOTSTOOLS OFFERED IN THE THONET'S 1888 CATALOGUE, THE NO. 2 STOOL WAS THE MOST EXPENSIVE. THE HIGH COSTS CAN BE EXPLAINED BY THE AMBITIOUS USE OF BENTWOOD SCROLLS THAT SUPPORT THE CIRCULAR FRAME OF THE CANED FOOTREST. THE FRAGILE CANING (ACTUALLY UNSUITABLE FOR A FOOTREST) AND THE DELICACY OF THE SCROLLING LEGS HAVE MADE THESE STOOLS AMONG THE RAREST OF NINETEENTH-CENTURY BENTWOOD FURNISHINGS TO SURVIVE.
